My Undervalued Fav

As far as sweets go, York has been one of my recently acquired favorites. I wasn't always a fan of mint and I cannot say I truly love it. This one is different however. This candy has a lot going for it and I don't think it gets the recognition is deserves.

What is it?

For those who don't know it, Yorks are peppermint flavored soft insides covered in dark chocolate. I don't know what to call the inside really. It certainly isn't a cream or a nougat. I guess the closest descriptor would be a paste or a really thick frosting? I hesitate to call it that though. Rest assured, it is pretty good.

Innards

The peppermint is super light and refreshing. I made ribs for dinner, and as I light finish to a heavy meal, these did the trick. It really cleanses the palate (or whatever pretentious people say). If I had to make a single complaint, it might be a smidge too sweet.

Chocolate

This is covered in Hersheys dark chocolate. The dark chocolate stands up to the mint without overdoing it. I feel like milk chocolate would be too weak. Also I love dark chocolate and this is pretty low sugar as far as chocolates go which I am a fan of for flavor reasons. I like my chocolates to be strong, and this delivers. It isn't waxy or grainy like some low-end chocolates can be and overall makes this a kinda refined candy.

How to eat it

You can eat this at room temperature like a normal person, or you can put them in the freezer. I discovered this by accident once and it was actually somewhat interesting. The shell gets more brittle and snaps when you bite in which is always cool. The inside solidifies and becomes hard when you first bite, but turns more chewy as it thaws until is melts. If I could have one candy after being out in the sun, frozen york would be the way to go.

Only downside

After about 2 I hit my wall. Like Hi-Chew or Oreos, at some point you have to stop or it gets kinda gross. Maybe this is a positive, but the taste gets really overwhelming after a few.

Review: 8/10

It is a bit too sweet, and gets too strong after a few, but everything else is dead on. I recommend this if you've never had one.

Sort:
