Oh, that little bitch, ego... A little parasite. A non-contributing smarty-pants, always complaining, always knowing everything much better than anyone. How it loves to criticize, but always in retrospective, never in a productive way. Worst of all: the more you like to shut it up, the more it needs to assert itself.
Unfortunately, ego stands for the I, the one-letter word in English that is always capitalized. And why not, it is after all me! (Don't worry, you have your own little bitch nagging on you, as does everyone else.) So what can we do, other than embrace it, cuddle it (just a bit more than it is ready to accept), and let it know that with all its bitching and complaining, it is still a much appreciated part of ourselves. That'll give it something to revel in for a while, and it won't get in the way of our conscious explorations.
