I recently gave birth to my baby boy. Turns out there are so many things I didn't know about babies!
Babies don't know that they have arms and legs. Until about 3 months of age they have no idea that they have body parts:) Babies just lay there and don't know that they can grab things. I think this was the biggest revelation I had. I could never imagine that we get born and don't have any control of our limbs.
Breastfeeding takes a long time and can be very painful. Newborn babies have to eat every 2 to 3 hours for about 30 minutes. That adds up to 4-6 hours a day! When you see a lady breastfeeding, it always looks like such a peaceful activity. However I was so wrong about it. In reality breastfeeding hurts and can even lead to bleeding. Your nipples are on fire to the point where you are scared to get into the shower.
Babies don't see very far. A newborn can only see 1-2 feet away. This means that they can only see the face of the person holding them. Also they can only see black, white, and red colors. With time their vision improves, and by 4 months of age, they can see several meters away and can distinguish a wide range of colors.
Babies don't know that something can be scary. They have no fear of falling or anything else for that matter. They don't know that something can be painful, hot, or cold. We are born completely fearless. Our life experiences are what shape our fears throughout the years.
After each feeding babies need to be burped. Apparently, they swallow some air while drinking milk or even when crying. That air needs help to come out. That's why babies need to be held vertically after feeding, so that air bubbles can come up.
We have a natural instinct to hold breath under water. You can easily teach babies to swim under water and they will not drown.
Until 6 months of age babies don't need to drink water. Breast milk is all the food and liquid they need. Only when they start eating real people food when you can introduce water to their diet.
Who knew?!
