Today's vinyl of the day is my heavy, tortured, and incomparably dark copy of Sunn O)))'s Black One.
This album inhabits the incredibly niche realm of drone doom metal. It's like ambient music from the 7th circle of hell. It's like new age for moody metalheads. Just imagine two bearded monk-looking mofos wearing black robes and slowly striking subterranean chords on downtuned Les Pauls. That's Sunn O))) in a nutshell.
Not to downplay or satirize the amazing the work of Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley; because Black One is one of the duo's most amazing albums. The sound of this record is incredibly heavy, powerful, and borderline terrifying--especially when Malefic a.k.a. Xasthur is screaming his brains out in what sounds like a pine box casket on the album's final track.
But as dark as this record is, there's something hypnotic and blissful about it as well, which makes an uninterrupted listen a truly otherworldly experience. Give the album a shot via the embed below, and try to grab it on vinyl if you can, because the bass frequencies get even LOUDER!
Really liked this one. Awesome blend of Black metal and drone. I felt like the last two were a little pretentious tho.
lol, that frigging picture!!!
I haven't heard of these guys before. I'm 12 minutes in and, well, I'm excited to see where this is going!
The artwork is amazing. I'd love to get my hands on a copy of the vinyl for that alone.
Quick question: how long have you been music-blogging(or whatever you want to call it)? I'm curious because you seem to have a really good handle on it; your page is the first music page on here I've found of real interest and in a matter of 24 hours has become one of the pages I'm most interested in visiting.
I'm asking because I joined with no direction, which I'm totally cool with, but I've been interested in blogging more about music, as it's what I know most about.
Sorry for the rant. Rock on!
I haven’t listened to sunn O))) in a long time, thanks for the reminder. This will start out my morning just right ;)
Nice to see some other music reviews happening on steemit, following for more:)
