RE: Negative Self Talk, Self Doubt, and Imposter Syndrome

in #blog7 years ago

Only an imposter would experience imposter syndrome. Just kidding. I've felt like:"I don't know what the heck I'm doing, how come people don't notice that I am completely clueless right now." and then I pray really hard and just stick in there and I end up winging it. Do what ever works for you, but yeah fake it till you make it. I think it is important to set the right expectation for example in a programming job when they give you something new to do that you've never done before, then just admit that you are still learning and ask as many questions as possible. Everybody feels like an imposter sometimes, some people more often than others. In contrast it is better to be grounded and doubt the depth of your skills a bit as opposed to being super overconfident and taking things on that you could never complete(as this will make your super anxious and people will be expecting results). I've been at points in my career where I felt like I did not know what the heck I'm doing, but then the next moment I would realise that I knew allot more than my colleagues, so either they are imposters or I actually knew what was going on, or well perhaps all of the above.

As long as you use imposter syndrome as a way to improve yourself then I think it is a good thing, but if it is getting you down and affecting your career then you should seek some professional help. Nice article! I enjoy following you.
