Hey everyone! This post was a long time in the making, but I'm thrilled to say that I finally passed my business IT certification exam!
Hallo an alle! Dieser Post hat eine lange Zeit gedauert, aber es freut mich zu sagen, dass ich meine IT-Zertifizierung Prüfung endlich bestanden habe!
My certification focuses on SAP ERP, which is one of SAP's key products. SAP is the largest software company in Europe and one of the largest software companies in the world. ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning, and it allows a business to manage its key processes within logistics, accounting and human resources, from one integrated software solution.
Das Schwerpunkt meiner Zertifizierung ist SAP ERP, eines der wichtigsten Produkten von SAP. SAP ist der größten Softwarehersteller in Europa, und einer der größten Softwarehersteller auf der Welt. ERP steht für Enterprise Resource Planning, und es ermöglicht die Verwaltung von allen Geschäftsprozessen (z.B. Rechnungswesen, Vertrieb, und Personalwesen) in einer einzelnen integrierten Softwarelösung.
The course - Der Kurs
The full name of my course is TERP10 - Integration of Business Processes in SAP ERP, and as the name suggests, the purpose of the course is not only to show how key business processes are carried out in SAP ERP, but most importantly, to show how different processes affect other aspects of a business. So for example, if a business takes an order from a customer, this will affect both logistics (e.g. because their will be a change in the inventory of goods in the warehouse) and finance (the order will be recorded in the accounts). Basically - nothing in a business happens in a vacuum!
Der volle Titel meines Kurses ist TERP10 - Integrierte Geschäftsprozesse in SAP ERP. Der Zweck des Kurses ist nicht nur zu erklären wie wichtige Geschäftsprozesse in SAP ERP ausgeführt werden, sondern auch zu erklären wie Prozesse in einem Geschäftsbereich eine Wirkung auf andere Geschäftsbereiche haben. Zum Beispiel, ein Antrag von einer Kunde hat eine Wirkung auf Logistik (es wird das Warenbestandsverzeichnis ändern) und auf Rechnungswesen (das Unternehmen bekommt eine Bezahlung). Ganz einfach - nichts in einem Unternehmen passiert in einem Vakuum!
The course itself is traditionally taught in a classroom over two weeks, with 9 days of instructor tuition, followed by the certification exam on the 10th day. SAP also offers self-directed, distance learning via its online e-Academy. I opted for this route, which is a lot cheaper than the classroom course and allowed me to study at my own pace. It also saved me the cost of living in a hotel in London for two weeks.
Der Kurs wird traditionell in zwei Wochen in einem Klassenzimmer unterrichtet, mit neun Tagen Unterricht von einem Lehrer, und dann eine Prüfung auf dem zehnte Tag. Durch sein "e-Academy" bietet SAP auch selbst-geleitetes Fernstudium an. Ich habe diesen Weg gewählt, weil es viel billiger als der Klassenzimmerkurs ist und weil ich zu meinem eigenen Leistungsvermögen lernen konnte. Ich musste auch nicht für ein Hotel in London für zwei Wochen bezahlen.
The journey - Die Reise
After a lot of studying, a lot of stress, and a lot of caffeine, it was finally time to get on the train. My exam started at 9am on 3rd October at SAP in London, very close to Heathrow airport. This meant a night in a hotel, as my hometown is too far away – 2.5 hours on the train from Great Yarmouth to London Liverpool Street station, and then an hour on the underground and a quick bus ride to the hotel.
Nach viel Lernen, viel Stress, und viel Koffein, war die Zeit endlich da, in den Zug einzusteigen. Meine Prüfung fingen gegen 0900 Uhr am 3. Oktober beim SAP in London an, ganz in der Nähe von Heathrow. Das bedeutete eine Nacht in einem Hotel, weil meine Heimatstadt zu weit weg ist, also, 2,5 Stunden mit dem Zug von Great Yarmouth nach London Liverpool Street, und dann eine Stunde mit der U-Bahn und eine kurze Reise mit dem Bus zum Hotel.

The hotel
The hotel was exactly what I needed: cheap, and within walking distance to SAP. The room was small and basic, but suitable enough. It was situated in the middle of a shopping precinct, with a supermarket and a Wetherspoons pub nearby.
Das Hotel war genau was ich brauchte – günstig und in Fußnähe vom SAP Gebäude. Das Zimmer war klein und einfach, aber passend. Es befand sich in der Mitte eines Einkaufsviertels mit einem Supermarkt und einem Wetherspoons Pub in der Nähe.
The day - Der Tag
After around 2km on foot, I arrived at the SAP building in good time and signed myself in.

There is only one way to describe SAP certification exams: difficult. Most exams follow the same format: 80 multiple choice questions in 3 hours. This is not as easy as it sounds. The exams are heavily fact-based, and the questions are structured in such a way so that you cannot work out the correct answer via process of elimination. Some questions require 2-4 correct answers out of 4-6 possibilities, and if the candidate does not give every correct answer, then the question is marked as incorrect. This of course makes sense – SAP does not want that its associates are only able to carry out half of a solution. Basically, there is no alternative to knowing the course material off by heart.
Es gibt nur ein Wort um die Prüfungen von SAP zu beschreiben: schwierig. Die meisten Prüfungen haben das gleiche Format: 80 Multiple Choice Fragen in 3 Stunden. Das ist nicht so leicht wie es klingt. Die Prüfungen sind sehr tatsachenbezogen, und die Fragen sind struktuiert, so dass man die richtige Antwort mit einem Ausschlussverfahren nicht herausfinden kann. Manche Fragen brauchen 2-4 Antworten aus 4-6 Möglichkeiten, und man muss alle richtigen Antworten geben um die Frage als richtig bewertet zu bekommen. Das ergibt natürlich Sinn – SAP will nicht dass seine Angehörige nur die Hälfte einer Lösung ausführen können. Ganz einfach: das Lernmaterial auswendig können ist der einzige Weg.
For my exam, the pass mark was 59%, or 48 correctly answered questions. It was not graded – simply either passed or failed.
Die Mindestpunktzahl meiner Prüfung war 59%, oder 48 richtige Antworten. Die Prüfung war nicht benotet – einfach nur bestanden oder nicht bestanden.
Naturally I wasn’t the only candidate – there were around 10 of us in total, although I do not know which certification exams the others were taking. Once we had all arrived, we were shown to the exam room, where the invigilator greeted us and checked our identification. It was clear that there was some nervousness, but the mood in the room felt positive. I logged into the computer and started my exam.
Natürlich war ich nicht der einzige Kandidat – es gab ungefähr zehn von uns zusammen, aber ich wusste nicht welche Prüfungen die anderen Kandidaten machten. Nachdem wir alle ankamen, wurden wir in den Prüfungsraum geführt, wo die Prüfungsaufseherin uns empfing und unseren Ausweis kontrollierte. Es war klar dass es ein bisschen Angst gab, aber die Stimmung im Raum fühlte mir positiv. Ich meldete mich im Computer an und fing meine Prüfung an.
Three hours is quite a lot of time – I was able to read all of the questions very quickly. The exam system allows you to tag questions you would like to revisit, and then you can use the exam overview option to navigate to them quickly. The exam overview also tells you which questions you have not answered. After checking each question twice, it was finally time for the moment of truth: clicking the submit button. Will I pass? While it can take up to a few weeks for your certificate to arrive in the post, you can find out whether or not you have passed or failed as soon as you click that button. To be honest, I was not convinced I would pass at the first attempt, but as I started to answer more and more questions confidently, my mind started to change. Surely I was in with a chance?
Drei Stunden ist ziemlich viel Zeit – ich konnte alle Fragen sehr schnell durchlesen. Das Prüfungssystem erlaubt man die Fragen zu markieren, die man wieder besuchen möchtet. Dann kann man die Prüfungsüberblick Option benutzen, um sie schnell wieder zu besuchen. Der Prüfungsüberblick erklärt auch, welche Fragen man nicht beantwortet hat. Nachdem ich jede Frage zweimal prüfte, kam die Stunde der Wahrheit: auf den Submit-Knopf zu klicken. Werde ich bestehe? Obwohl es ein Paar Wochen für die Ankunft des Zertifikats mit der Post dauern kann, sobald man auf den Knopf klickt, findet man sofort heraus ob man bestanden hat oder nicht. Um ehrlich zu sein war ich nicht überzeugt dass ich bei dem ersten Versuch bestehen würde, aber als ich an fing, immer mehr Fragen selbstbewusst zu beantworten, fing an meine Meinung zu ändern. Ich hatte ein Chance oder?
YES! The first word I read on the next screen was “Congratulations!” I couldn’t believe it. What a great feeling! I bought a coffee, and started to share the good news with my friends and family. I went straight back to the hotel to pack my things.
JA! Das erste Wort das ich auf der nächsten Seite las, war “Gratuliere!” Ich konnte es nicht glauben. Was für ein gutes Gefühl! Ich kaufte einen Kaffe und teilte die gute Nachricht mit meiner Familie und meinen Frenden. Ich ging sofort zum Hotel um meine Sachen zu packen.
Within a couple of weeks, I received this nice certificate from SAP in Germany! Mission accomplished!
Innerhalb ein Paar Wochen bekam ich dieses schönes Zertifikat von SAP in Deutschland! Mission erledigt!
