A woman asked me the other day, “Why do you crew for events? Doesn’t that make you less authoritative and less of an expert in your field?”.
Arg. No.
I simply said, “What planet do you live on, lady?”. Well, I didn’t say that, but I felt like saying that. What I said was, “Really? Why would you say that? I think it’s the opposite.”
The reason I still crew for other people at their events boils down to five main points.
1. It’s the right thing to do and it’s the nice thing to do.
People need help, and as a business owner who runs events, I understand exactly what it means to have a good crew, or to have a really good volunteer.
As a speaker or a presenter, you need people to look after you throughout the course of the event, to get you water, to help you with your tech, to basically make sure that you have everything you need, to help you set up, and all of the bits and pieces you don’t account for.
When it comes to running events, your crew are the backbone of those events and so I pride myself on being a really good crew member because I know what it means to have a really good crew (or a really bad one!) – and it can make or break your event.
2. I’ll always learn something.
Every time I crew for somebody, I watch the way that they run the event. I watch the way that they present or speak, and I take little bits and pieces in two different ways: The way they present so I can see if I need to change anything in the way I present, and then, of course, the way that they’re delivering the information and the information that’s being delivered.
3. It boosts my reputation.
It’s nice to have a reputation where people see you as being reliable and giving. That’s what it boils down to for me in my business is that I want my clients to see me as being reliable and as also being giving.
4. Giving, it’s all about giving.
We’re here to serve and that means that if somebody needs a hand, I’m going to stick out my hand and say, “I’m here to help you. I’m here to serve you.”
Why? Because business is hard in general. While running a small business, you have to have to wear so many different hats. The reason that I crew for people is to also give back and to help because even though I’ve only been doing it a short while, 12 months now, I’ve learned a lot and I can help teach new people what I know.
Business is all about giving, giving, giving.
5. Attract more of what I’m giving.
You need a good crew so if I’m giving back and sharing my knowledge and sharing my information like I am in this blog, or like I do in my workshops or at my events, then I’m bound to get that back from the universe in some way.
When you have a good crew, your events run so much more smoothly and you would start to attract that back into your life.
I’m always on the hunt for crew and volunteers for my blogging workshops and events. Let me know if you’d like to join us.
