What is stopping you from Vlogging?

in #blogging7 years ago

I started vlogging today. You can see it embedded above.

It's not the best video, it's not even good, but it is mine and it is me.

Video blogging

Yeah it's not a new thing, but it is new to me ... because of fear.

Maybe you have the same things holding you back?

Let's go through the major challenges and how I am trying to set my mind about them ... trying ....

What holds you back?

  • Fear of rejection/criticism/trolls - YouTube is notorious for having bad elements in the community. This is a hard one because really the only thing you can do is expect it or turn off comments. We can, however, TRY to focus on the nice people. Really, the negative folks are reflecting their own insecurities. If they weren't so annoying and toxic we could feel sorry for them. At some point you have to find YOUR audience and stop listening to the critics who have never created anything, they just tear down, because you doing something makes their lazy asses feel bad :)

  • Perfectionism - Also something that has held me back for a long time. I needed practice, technique, yada ... no, you don't, not really. Just execute. The more you think you have to be something you are not, the more juicy you will look to trolls who smell your fear.

  • Technology - Related to the above. Just get a point and shoot camera and go for it. People will complain, but also some people will like what you do regardless, and you can always improve. I told myself I couldn't start until I bought the camera in my video. Don't be like me.

  • Workflow - Something I am struggling with still but if you get a camera that is "good enough" that cuts down somewhat in swapping, changing, and editing. And if you can do as much in one take without being too self-conscious or umming and coughing you can speed up the whole thing. It takes practice and not worrying too much about outside opinions again!

  • No Audience - Having no audience is actually an advantage to begin with because fewer people will see your practice videos! Over time you will get better and your audience will grow. Plus, as I did, you can reach out to your friends on the various platforms.

Execute and improve

Don't get me wrong, it's not easy. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and doing it well.

I am not doing it, but just like my diet, and going to the gym, you do your best every day and things improve :)

What do you think? Have you tried? Something holding you back? Any of this resonate? Let me know in the comments

Good for you!

I think with a little more practice it will become second nature.

Will you be using Dtube for your Vlogs in future?

I will definitely try it - I just didn't want learning about Dtube to be another reason to delay :) I would geek out, get distracted, and come around in a months time not having gotten any further ;)

Yeah, I figured with all the demonetisation on Youtube, they had made it not very friendly for creators.

YouTube is so weird, I really don't get it sometimes :)

Never tried Vloging but maybe one day, LOL whats the worst that can happen ? right ? keep up the good work.

I think the worst that can happen is someone is SO offended they get YouTube to shut you down, or maybe your mistakes go viral, but really - not life or death is it? :D

I also started 2 weeks ago with making some videos, just to look back and see how life was back then. i just don't like to film myself speaking because it is really awkward.

I'm also uncomfortable seeing and hearing myself, we are our own worst and least impartial critics :)
