Blue moon is a phenomenon when two full-moon phases occur in a calendar month. The second full moon was called Blue Moon. Why can there be two full-moon phases in a month?
The reason is because of the difference between the human calendar and the calculation of the Moon's revolution.
One year it's 365 days, meaning the Earth rounds the Sun for 365 days or 12 months. One year is equal to 12 times the Moon circling the Earth.
However, the Moon does not take 365 days for 12 times around the Earth. The moon only takes about 354 days over 10 hours 49 minutes for 12 times to evolve. That way, there will be 235 full moon phases for 228 calendar months. Means that within 19 years, there will be 7 months that happens 2 times the full moon phase.
In Indonesia, the bluemoon phenomenon that was present on January 30 and 31, 2018 has attracted much attention because of its appearance followed by a total lunar eclipse that comes from early evening until midnight.
There are three criteria used to define the supermoon phase, which is at the point closest to the earth (perigee), the intensity of light, and in terms of object size. But these three criteria are considered less relevant.
Because, almost every phase of rotation, the moon always passes this perigee position. Thus, if taken literally, then the moon is potentially in a 'super' state at every time it completes its rotation. In fact, the moon can be at the perigee point twice in a calendar month.
Full moon that occurred on March 31, 2018 is the second and final bluemoon for the year 2018. Do not miss your night on that date, enjoy this rare natural phenomenon.
