Early Life
Ranveer Singh was born in a Sindhi family to Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani. During his younger days, he was always attracted to movies and would participate in school plays and debates. His excitement knew no bounds, when his grandmother asked him to entertain her at a birthday party and Ranveer instantly performed on the hit song 'Jumma Chumma' from the movie 'Hum'. However, as he grew up, he realized that getting an entry into Bollywood is not for lesser mortals like him and hence joined H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.
Subsequently, he landed in United States to get a degree in Arts from Indiana University, Bloomington. At the university, he decided to take acting classes and kept his dream of acting in movies alive. He also took up theatre as his minor subject. He returned to Mumbai after getting his degree and chose to pursue a career in creative writing. He started working in advertising agencies such as O & M and J. Walter Thompson as a copy writer. After a short stint as copy writer, he again shifted his focus to his calling – acting. To achieve his dream, he started working as an assistant director and meanwhile kept sending his portfolios to various directors. Ranveer attended all kinds of auditions, but did not get an opportunity. As a result, he was dejected and at one point even questioned his choice of career. However, things changed when he got a call from Yash Raj Films for an audition and the rest is history.

2010 - 2012: Debut and Success
Ranveer Singh got a break in Bollywood with the Yash Raj movie 'Band Baaja Baaraat' in the year 2010. This romantic comedy movie introduced two newcomers, Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh, in leading roles. Ranveer Singh auditioned for the role of Bittoo Sharma but the director wasn't convinced. He again called Ranveer for a series of auditions until he was finally convinced. The movie slowly and steadily picked up with word of mouth and went on to become a sleeper hit. Ranveer received praise for playing the role of uncouth yet good hearted boy. His performance won him his first Filmfare award.
In the following year, he was again seen in a Yash Raj movie 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl' where he played the character of a conman. The movie fared well at the box office and once again his performance was appreciated by critics.
2013 - Present: Rise to Stardom
Ranveer's first release of the year 2013 was a period drama 'Lootera'. The movie did not fare well at the box office, but was critically acclaimed. Ranveer's performance had the depth which the character required, thereby leaving a lasting impression. It was Ranveer's nuanced performance which made the movie worth a watch. His second release of the year was 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram- Leela' which generated good reviews from critics for his performance. The movie went on to become one of Ranveer Singh's biggest commercial successes.
In the subsequent year, Ranveer was seen as a Bengali criminal in the movie 'Gunday' where his superb screen presence and his chemistry with Arjun Kapoor was applauded by critics. This movie proved to be Ranveer Singh's biggest day one opener. But, his next movie 'Kill Dill' flopped at the box office.
In the year 2015, he was seen in the comedy drama 'Dil Dhadakne Do' with an ensemble cast. He again united with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the movie 'Bajirao Mastani' where he played the title character of Bajirao. Ranveer Singh started on the wrong foot when he criticized Salman Khan's movie 'Ek Tha Tiger' by saying that the movie was an absolute bore except for the last 15 minutes. He further joked that while he was passing through a multiplex, people after watching the movie were asking for Tiger Balm.
Ranveer Singh was involved in the controversial comedy show, AIB Roast and is named in an FIR for presenting obscenity in public.
