Despite being one of the most awaited releases of 2017, we had no clarity about the final release date of Padmavati even a day before year end. However, a positive update coming in today suggested that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ambitious project might finally be able to the see the light of the day. What dampened the spirits of cine goers was learning that Padmavati will not be the same as Bhansali had envisioned it to be.
As per reports, the board and the special panel appointed to review the film and decide on its certification suggested 27 cuts and three disclaimers in the film along with a change in the title. However, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Chief Prasoon Joshi has set the record straight and revealed that there are no cuts whatsoever and only five modifications that have been suggested. Talking to Zee Media, Joshi said, “This was an unprecedented and tough situation. I am glad that following a balanced approach we resolved the task at hand in a pragmatic and positive manner.”

The board, along with the special panel comprising Arvind Singh from Udaipur, Dr.Chandramani Singh and Prof K.K. Singh of the Jaipur University, have decided to give Padmavati a UA certification. Talking about how the decision was reached upon, Joshi revealed, “The members of the panel had insights and also some reservations regarding the claimed historical events and socio-cultural aspects which were duly discussed at length after viewing the film on the evening of December 28.” Joshi was also present along with the examining committee members and the special panel which then met the filmmaker to suggest the changes.
Elaborating on the suggested modifications, Joshi said, “We have asked the filmmakers to change the disclaimer to one that does not claim historical accuracy; modify the incorrect/misleading reference to historical places; add a disclaimer which states that the film in no manner subscribes or glorifies the practice of Sati.”
Apart from the aforementioned three changes, the board has also asked for the song Ghoomar to be modified to make the depiction befitting the character being portrayed. “We have also asked the makers to change the title from Padmavati to ‘Padmavat’ as the filmmakers have attributed their material/creative source to the fictional poem Padmavat and not history,” clarified Joshi. He added that all these changes are completely in agreement with the producers and director of the film.
Now, with all the concerned parties on board, the day is not far when we will know when the film is finally hitting the screens. Shahid Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s fans can finally heave a sigh of relief..!
