The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli

in #book2 years ago

I went into this book knowing that it was badly written and it definitely is.
As an old, non-fiction, translated work, it's bound to be a little hard to understand, but the sheer length of the sentences in some parts is simply ridiculous. Machiavelli really loves his semicolons it seems, as every line has one or two at least. His language is similarly haughty, but this can be excused for the aforementioned reasons.
The ideas presented in the book itself are quite interesting with each chapter pontificating on different ways to secure governance. Coupled with the history lessons given as examples, each chapter is engrossing providing one can get past the grandiose language.

As a short book, The Prince is a relatively quick read (again, as long as you can get past the language and grammatical barriers) that I'd recommend as a book that anyone interested in politics would probably enjoy. Personally, I think its restricted by the way its written but stress that it has some neat concepts.
