'Generation Kill' by Evan Wright - A Book Review

in #books7 years ago (edited)

Hi there fellow steemians!
Today I want to tell you about a book I read a few years back but I still think about to this day.

"Generation Kill" by Evan Wright, a Rolling Stone journalist, was published 2004. It chronicles his experience as a reporter who travels with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the United States Marine Corps during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Wright spent two months with the marines. In the beginning the marines didn't really like him and would rather be left alone, but after a couple of days they accepted Wright as one of their own. The reporter gets to meet a lot of different ranking marines - the main characters being: Sgt. Brad Colbert, Lance Corporal Harold James Trombley, Sergeant Rudy Reyes, First Lieutenant Nathaniel Flick, Sergeant Antonio Espera and Corporal Josh Ray Person.

All these characters get portraied really well. After a couple of pages you feel like you are part of the team. And as part of the team it really shows you the horrors of mordern day warfare. It really makes you look at soldiers that have been to war in a different way. The things they went through, the friends they buried and the dreams they still have flesh this book out brilliantly.

I can highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in war stories, history and the psychology of modern day soldiers. It is just an exciting read from the first to the last page!

So withouht spoiling too much for you, that concludes my short review. Let me know in the comment section below if you are a fan of war stories and what books you like that have a similiar theme!

P.S.: HBO also produced a TV-show that is based on this book. So everyone who isn't a big fan of books might want to check out the show "Generation Kill". Oh and as always: Not a native, sorry for eventual mistakes.

I thought the HBO miniseries was fantastic. I'll have to give the book a shot! Thanks for posting!

Yeah I also liked the show. If you liked the show, you will love the book!
