When coming out of the shady forest, vegetation on the rocks is changed from moss to lichen. The moss thrives better in the humid forest while the lava grows where it is drier and lighter.

I've always been a fan of the way lichen photographs -- it reminds me of cultured live rock in oceans or salt water aquariums.
