How To Eat To Promote A Healthier Brain & Nervous System By Martin Reilly
We’re here to talk about your nervous system. More specifically, what you can do to promote a healthy one.
Your nervous system, which begins with your brain, is responsible for everything you do. Without it, you’d fail to survive.
Many things can impact your nervous system. Too much stress is a big one. Overdoing exercise is another. Lack of sleep is perhaps the biggest of all.
With so many things working against your nervous system, it’s important that you have at least one thing working for it. Your diet can have an influence and your diet is 100% controllable.
Stress is something you’ll likely never escape and for many of us, that 9-hour sleep per night will always elude us simply because we are too busy in our day to day lives.
So start by focusing on something you can control and take it from there. Every single little change you do make will bring you one step closer to feeling better and better.
1. Serve A Banana A Day
While the common saying ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ may help you get more fresh fruit in, you might want to swap out the apple and have a banana instead. Getting enough potassium in your diet, along with calcium, is super important to sustaining a healthy nervous system.
Other great sources of potassium include potatoes and sweet potatoes as well as yogurt, which provides both the potassium as well as the calcium in one.
2. Drink More Water, Less Sugar
A sad fact is that many of our beverage choices today are loaded with sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. Both of these are doing our central nervous system no favors.
Instead, opt for water. Staying well hydrated is key for nervous system function but you must achieve that without the sugar.
Water is a great choice and if you must have something flavored, try adding a lemon or lime to your water. This will give that hint of taste you desire without any added sugar.
3. Load Up On The Beef
It’s time to stop shunning beef! Too many people exclude this item on their menu because they believe it’s too high in fat, cholesterol, and/or calories.
Choose grass fed beef however and that isn’t the case. What’s more is that beef is also rich in vitamin B12, which is a vitamin that’s quite hard to get in through the diet and is imperative for proper nervous system function.
Vitamin B12 is harder to find in everyday foods, making beef very important. A few servings a week should do the trick. While it may be a little higher in calories than chicken or fish, it’s well worth it when you consider the nutritional payoff.
4. Swap Butter For Olive Oil
Finally, as much as you can, try and swap out the butter you normally eat for some olive oil instead. Olive oil has a healthier fat profile in terms of supporting a proper nervous system and boosting brain health.
Olive oil is great for reducing overall body inflammation, which can help improve nervous system health.
So there you have the best foods to eat to improve your nervous system. As you can see, they’re all foods that can easily be part of an everyday diet so there’s no reason not to get these into the picture.
P.S. Which of these foods are you missing out on? Are there any you’d add to this list?
