UNDERSTANDING THE BENEFITS OF BRAINWAVE ACTIVITIES
Several events influence our mind-body relationship, and these actions are reflected in our brainwaves. Your daily activities have a significant impact on the kind of brainwaves are produced in your brain. If you've always wanted to understand how different brainwave states affect you and your personal growth, take the time to go through this article. We've described what brainwaves are and the five (not four) categories, and the benefits involved in each of them.
What are Brainwaves?
Your brain consists of neurons which communicate with each other using electricity. The rhythmic fluctuation of this electric potential between parts of the brain refers to Brainwaves. These waves are often captured on an electroencephalogram (EEG). They also have varying frequencies at different levels.
Studies have proven that our brain operates at different wavelengths and fluctuating frequencies are created. These frequencies are produced by electrical activity, and they are measured in Hertz (Hz) which refers to cycle per second. These frequencies are dependent on the cycles per second.
Types/Categories of Brainwaves
While some scientists argue that there are four categories, we'll like to share the known five with you. These include:
Beta Brainwaves
Theta Brainwaves
Gamma Brainwaves
Alpha Brainwaves
Delta Brainwaves
Beta Brainwaves – When your mind is active, focused and engaged, these brainwaves are produced. Considered the most common pattern, this brainwave is useful for a fight-flight response. Within 14-32 Hz, it allows you stay focused and fully alert. Also, your level of critical thinking and reasoning is raised. Usually, people who suffer from insomnia experience an excess production of this brainwave.
Theta Brainwaves – When you feel unconscious or a little unaware of your immediate surroundings, your brain is producing this brainwave at 3.5-7 Hz. This is the best state for meditation and relaxation, and it allows you to go into a trance or even daydream. When in this state, you enjoy a higher level of inspiration, relaxation, emotional stability and spiritual connection. It allows your body to rest from stress, anxiety and mental pressure.
Gamma Brainwaves – At 40 Hz and above, these brainwaves are responsible for exceptional intellectual ability. Their frequencies are the fastest, and the brain enjoys good memory and retention in this state. When you're able to remember the precise details of an event, a song, an adventure and everything that requires some great level of processing, your brain is in this state. Also, you exhibit a high degree of awareness of your environment and can control yourself better. The intelligence that comes with it allows you to increase your learning and creative performance.
Alpha Brainwaves – These waves operate at a lower frequency of 7-14 Hz. In this state, you are less aware of the outside world, and your mind just relaxes and wanders. This state is regarded as the middle ground between your subconscious and conscious mind. When you engage in simple activities like taking a walk or weeding your garden, your mind doesn't pay so much attention to the ongoing activity itself. The benefit of this state is that you can meditate without interruption and imagine more freely. You also get to concentrate better on the new activity and not have to feel anxiety or depression of any sort.
Delta Brainwaves – Your brain produces these waves when you're asleep with the frequency at 0.1-3.5 Hz. These waves are the slowest, and they help the body to heal itself from previous stressful tasks. In this state, anti-aging hormones like melatonin are produced to allow your body to keep growing. Also, physical pain heals quicker, and you can feel more concern and compassion for people. More so, you enjoy the deepest spiritual connection and relaxation. It is your ticket to the unconscious world.
With all of these brainwaves and their benefits, you can help your body find rest through meditation or even improve your physical and mental performance.
