Penicillin acts by inhibiting cell wall formation during the growth and proliferation of bacteria. One of the enzymes in the bacteria stops this effect of penicillin. Several enzymes are involved in the breakdown of penicillin by bacteria.
Up to ten enzymes allow bacteria to use carbonaceous compounds as a result of the breakdown of penicillin as nutrients. When the genes encoding all of these enzymes were transferred to harmless Escherichia coli bacteria, they began to use the antibiotic as a nutrient.
So far, no disease-causing bacteria have been found in this feature, but it is thought that this situation will not last long as bacteria can easily exchange genes between them.
Dantes hopes their findings will help researchers produce antibiotics that bacteria cannot break down. On the other hand, it is thought that the discovered enzymes may be useful for the disintegration of antibiotic wastes, which cause a danger of mixing with nature and causing antibiotic resistance.
