Brexit Fatigue?
Is this it? Are we finally approaching the end of the line regarding Brexit?
Wither you live in the UK or not, I’m sure you, like me are sick to death of the subject... Well buckle up because we’re going to discuss the matter again!
I have come to the line of thought that the deeper you go into the details of the benefits/disadvantages of EU membership, the more confusing the case becomes. Largely due to the fact that it is hard to describe ‘Acurately’ how leaving the EU would affect the economy and country in general, because it has never been done before.
An example of trying to dissect the argument can for example go:
Surely borderless trade is good for your nearest partners? ...Of course!
However...
Surely trade negotiations with the rest of the world will be better on a bilateral basis, considering your own requirements rather than a multinational trade agreement that considers other countries needs equally to yours... Probably!
But...
We can get a better deal if we negotiate as a group with more leverage... Maybe, but is that leverage still important when the needs of each 27 members waters down the individual wants of each country?
The list can go on and on. Depending on your bias, you will argue until the cows come home for “Your team”.
Try not to break it down to:
Economy
Immigration
Money
Trade
Supreme Court supremacy
I think this question needs to be broken down to an almost gut feeling.
Do you believe in a fully autonomous nation state with the benefits of dynamism that taking self interested decisions brings BUT loses the protection from an overseeing bureaucracy that ensures fare play? I.E. Can you kick your overlords out after a set number of years and possibly get something much worse?
Last question:
Are you a gambling man/woman?
Me: Yes, yes I am
