When I was taking part in meditation groups (to start with) we were told it was "monkey mind" this distraction of our inner thoughts always wanting to push their way into our head space while we were trying to achieve that 'no-thingness'.
I guess the inability to achieve such a stillness of mind is the greatest reason I'd always prefer guided meditations.
Advice I've read suggests letting those 'monkey mind' thoughts in but then basically acknowledge them but also that you'll address them once you've done with your meditation time - instead of simply trying to push them away out of existence. Which would get easier with practice, I assume.
