Ryugyong Hotel
The Ryugyong Hotel has been billed as the world’s tallest unfinished building. Although the exterior, minus the windows was completed in 1992, construction work stopped as North Korea entered a period of economic hardship.
The 105 building as it is also sometimes called had been planned as a mixed-use development including a hotel and had it opened on schedule would at that time been the tallest hotel in the world, as it stands, it now holds the world record for being the world’s tallest unoccupied building.
Construction work re-commenced on the 105 storey, pyramid shaped skyscraper in 2008 after an Egyptian contractor was employed by the North Korean government with the final touches being made to the exterior in 2011 but a planned opening for the hotel section of the building in 2012 was again postponed.
The future is as yet unknown for this 330m tall behemoth but it certainly dominates the Pyongyang skyline.
Located in the centre of the North Korean capital, under the present tense international situation, getting there may be a bit of a problem.
