If you’re tired of the rat race but aren’t ready to dip your toes in the liberating, yet admittedly terrifying world of self-employment, then one of the best things that you can do is to ask your boss if you can work from home to try it out.
Millions are already trying this, and the results have been pretty good for them so far. Consider this: no more office, no more commute…. But you do need to be able to drive yourself to get those boring spreadsheets and documents done.
This might seem easy – but it can be more difficult than it seems. Some of the best advice out there is also the most obvious, but it’s worth repeating it: declutter your workspace and limit distractions (kids, TV, food, video games…). Set out a routine that’s manageable and set boundaries between “work” time and “me” time. Regarding that last point, having a clear work space in your home – ideally a home office – is the easiest way to achieve all this.
For many people, a routine is important, and replacing your current commuting routine with something else is important. It might be exercise, it might be meditation, it might even be a brisk walk. Whatever it is, finding something to do to relax and prepare for the day ahead.
Just as important is having a routine and plan for your working day. A distraction-free workspace will work wonders here, as will allocating times for work – and ties for play. A schedule is the clearest route forward here, as well as making your workspace clean, comfortable, and official.
Most of all though, this is about a new life of freedom – whatever you do, make sure that it’s working for you as much as it is your boss! That’s the key here – and from here on out, you can start to expand.
