One of the biggest problems most people face when breaking into the world of online work is actually a pretty practical one that revolves around one of our most precious assets: time. The modern world isn’t cheap, and as a result most of us are busy juggling the demands of our job and family.
Taking some time out for a breather is vital for our sanity, and then we’ve got that chunk of the day where we need to sleep… so just where is the time anyone has for then launching a business? Well, you probably already know the answer to this, but it’s simply that you’re probably not going to have any free time at all for a long while – and that includes weekends and vacations.
Now, I don’t say this to demotivate you. It’s just how starting a new business is, and your 9 to 5 is something you can’t afford to give up until your new business income is replacing that of your 9 – 5. Sure, you can throw caution to the wind and jump feet first into your new business venture, but if it doesn’t work out then you’re in trouble. At least, make sure that you have enough saved up that you can live for at least a year, plus extra funds for emergencies.
Now, unless you’re wealthy, you need to be able to very carefully manage your time, and also make sure that you are optimizing the startup and growth of your business. That’s not always an easy thing to do, but one of the best ways I’ve ever find is to take a SWOT analysis.
The SWOT lets you determine the best style of business you should be pursuing for yourself, as well as letting you see where your strengths and weaknesses are. Remember, not everyone is cut out for being a business owner and the management that comes with it. There’s no shame in that – maybe the freelance lifestyle is more for you. While you might think that freelancers get a pretty bum deal, there are many people making six figure incomes every year, a number that continues to grow.
Perhaps you don’t want to do anything like that, period. Well, in that case, you can become a marketer and sell products such as t-shirts, courses, and a whole bunch of other things. The great thing about online work is that it gives you a lot of freedom. It’s also a double-edged sword for many, as it’s that same freedom that ends up crippling them with too much choice and no idea where to start.
Ultimately though, the best thing you can do when you have little time but plenty of money is to start looking for the answers you have inside you. The last thing you want is to waste a lot of resources on building a business that isn’t for you (dramatically increasing the chance of failure). That means taking the time to come up with an honest appraisal of what you envision yourself doing, and whether you can do it.
A business plan is also a great idea, giving you a roadmap to follow. The key point here is that you should be walking before breaking into a light jog and staying there: this is a marathon that you’ll be doing for a long time, so get prepared… then start. Trust me – it will make your life a lot easier, and make things seem a lot less impossible!
most folks are paralyzed by their self douby about the situation which makes them feel unable to do what you suggest.
