We get paid for our reputation, not what we do or what we think we're worth.
You could be the best graphic designer, writer or musician the world has ever seen. But if your ideal market - the people you're called to serve - perceive you as average or not-good-enough, they'll commonise you and they'll never pay you what you're truly worth.
It's not enough to be the best, you must portray yourself as the best. You must let who you really are, how you want to be perceived, influence what the market thinks of you. (Reputation is what they think you're, not necessarily the truth.)
To command respect and charge what you're worth, you must have a carefully constructed reputation.
The difference between graphic designers, writers and musicians who are charging a premium and those who are struggling is reputation. Build a good reputation, the one that commands respect and make clients and prospective clients chase after and not you chasing after them.
