By 2020, Millennials will form 50% of the global workforce. While older generations are on the verge of becoming a minority, I have seen lately many articles and comments on the internet describing Millennials not in the most advantageous way while most of them are not even on the market yet. How unfair! Are generation X and baby boomers feeling threatened? Well, they can! Today I have decided to give a voice to the Millennials and list some of their qualities that have a positive impact your organization.

They are technology savvy – Millennials are born with what we call today the Digital Revolution. They grew up with the first personal computers, cell phones even witnessing the early days of the internet. They have evolved with the technology as well as the technology has evolved with them. Give Millennials a new tool, they will do the rest.

They are self-learners – Self-learning has become a vital component of the Digital Revolution and in that environment Millennials have been able to take control and be responsible for their own learning from the beginning. Also, with information available at their fingertips they have developed an endless thirst for new knowledge and continuous improvement. This represents a great asset for companies that need to operate in an ever-changing environment.

They are responsive –With new technologies Millennials have been accustomed to do or get what they need quickly, developing the ability to gather relevant information within a short period of time and take action. Also, despite their proficiency in social media, Millennials will surprisingly favor face-to-face interactions in the workplace, allowing greater collaboration and agility.

They are committed to make a difference – If Baby Boomers are the ‘Me’ generation, Millennials are the ‘We’ generation. They are committed to make the world a better place to live for future generations and therefore value the role they play in their community. Millennials will therefore be loyal and engaged provided they have meaningful work in a company with a soul and purpose that is aligned with their values.

They are genuine – In an environment where we are surrounded by social media, transparency has become the norm and Millennials are not afraid of being authentic in the workplace. This fosters a climate of trust and therefore greater collaboration and performance.

They challenge the status quo to achieve greater efficiencies – Millennials tend to have less patience with inefficient technology, systems or processes. As a consequence they naturally tend to challenge the way things are done even if the company may have had done things in a certain way for many years.

They are adaptable – Millennials is the generation that has grown up for many of them with divorced parents, in a fast-paced and economically instable environment. Therefore, they have learnt to adapt and live in a world where the only constant is change.

They are resourceful - Millennials are very familiar with the words recession, unemployment and have entered the workforce where cost cutting and increase in profitability are on top of companies’ priority list. As a consequence, Millennials have developed an incredible ability to do more with less.

They are innovative – By having unlimited access to information they see the big picture of things. In a professional setting this means that they have the ability to go beyond the silos thinking and expand their perspective across functions or even industries, giving space to potential synergy opportunities.

Millennials are reshaping the workplace and have definitely a different view on the world. This might have created some misunderstanding between them and the older generations. However, with multiple generations now sharing the workplace, this represents a great opportunity for employers to leverage diversity and find a way for the different generations to learn from each other for the greater good!
