It is no secret that argumentative people have a passion for power, they may quickly overthrow the discussion. Your job requires ultimate self-control. That means, don’t try to win, and don’t take the bait no matter how strange or tempting it is, and don’t get caught up.
I would say these are phrases to avoid:
Please, I don’t want to argue with you.
I feel we can discuss this peacefully.
I’m sure we can come to agreement if...
You want to adhere to an outcome. You need words to diffuse issues not make them worse.
I understand what you mean, and I see it another way. This invites them to a different point of view.
That’s an interesting point. We could dive into it differently.
I understand, and I know many people feel that have felt the same.
I see your point. Do you mean this...
This is good because you can get to the bottom of what they really mean.
Then move forward in conversation, quickly changing gears. Be sure to use neutral connecting terms. You can use neutral ways to get to where they are in an argument. Seek to understand first then to be understood!
