The 5 lessons to be learnt from the firing of Travis Kalanick (Uber CEO)

  1. Women CANNOT be disrespected. That has NO conditions attached.

  2. As a founder, you define the business & company culture. Remember - startups always start with 1-3 people. The way the company talks, behaves, always starts with the 1st 10 people. As the CEO you manage them. If the're disrespectful, it's because you are disrespectful or tolerate disrespect. (E.g. - In media startups, founders often use foul language. Soon the entire organisation speaks like that)

  3. Investors must understand that a Startup Company's Culture is NOT a 'carpet to change'. It CANNOT get "fixed" by funding or getting new board members. Culture is like blood in the veins. You can't replace blood by getting a bigger bank account. Some things Money CAN BUY. Somethings it CAN'T.

  4. Being a 'Cowboy' is great! But I have a gut feel that Cowboys are most well mannered folks around. Taking on regulators, playing gladiator is great. But when it comes to matters of the heart, remember Spartacus - he was as gentlemanly as he was ferocious.

  5. Uber (after Amazon) is my BEST example of what a Startup can become. The sad tale of Travis proves once again that people matter more than Business.
