(39.53) 600 foreign fighters detained in Kurdish custody
On Thursday, the Pentagon said 600 foreign fighters were still in the hands of the United States-backed Syrian Democratic Force (SDF). Along with foreigners, the 400 Syrian fighters detained by the SDF are also being looked after. Middle East Media Middle East Monitor has said that since the formation of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, there is debate about what will be done with foreign fighters. The United States Defense Minister said that those foreign nationals who are the citizens of those countries must take responsibility for them.
US Navy Commander Sean Robertson said, "According to the estimation available until July of the year 2016, there are 600 foreign detainees fighting the SDF." A US official told CNN that 40 Russian nationals of detainees About one dozen people from Germany and France are also among these fighters. SDF is basically a Kurdish organization. The Syrian Democratic Front (SDF) comprised members of the People's Protection Unit (YPG), known as the banned Kurdish Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) branch. They had a great deal of support in the US to recover a large area of Syria from the IS. The United States also provided their military and financial support. In early July, US senator Lindsay Graham went to the SDG supervisor for inspection. There he assures the leaders of the organization, the United States will be next to them.
But SDF has now been trying to negotiate with Syrian Assad regime. After the news, the US has said it does not want SDF to negotiate with the Syrian government. The SDF has initially claimed that they have taken the help of the Syrian government on very few issues. But later, one of the leading members of the organization, Elham Ahmed, said they were discussing with the Syrian government for political solutions to the problem. Even the government-controlled Latakia town plans to open an office.
