I Lost A Whole Day Of "Steemin" - Learn From My Mistakes

Bandwidth Limit Exceeded. Please Wait To Transact Or Power Up.

Some of you may or may not know that all users have a limited amount of space or "bandwidth" that they are allowed to use on the Steem blockchain per week.

When you do things like:

  • Create a post
  • Upvote
  • Follow/Unfollow
  • Leave comment
  • Update your profile
  • Edit comment (Not to be confused with leaving a comment.)
  • Redeem Rewards
  • Buy or Powering up Steem (more on this specifically later)
  • Resteem
    -It takes up "space".

The amount of bandwidth we have is tied to the amount of Steem Power we have.

I'm sure there is some complicated formula for figuring that out but that is for another post by someone else. The purpose of limiting the bandwidth of users is to prevent spam or over use of the blockchain.

Once you exceed the limited amount of bandwidth and try to do any of those things listed on that list above (I'm sure I missed a few) you will receive the following message.

" Bandwidth Limit Exceeded. Please Wait To Transact Or Power Up."

You are basically BANNED.

What Now?

If you've never seen this message you probably have a decent amount of Steem power or don't use the platform enough.

The only two ways (that I know) to get rid of this message are to wait or power up some Steem in your account.

Option One: Wait. I don't know how long you are suppose to wait but hey the message says "please wait to transact". -So I guess its safe to say, simply waiting will solve the problem.

Option Two: Power Up. Again I don't know how much you need to "Power Up". - That's not what you are here to learn anyway.

My Mistakes

Before I get into my simple but very costly (my time cost) mistakes. I need to say that I joined Steem about a week ago lol.

Long story short I got the "MOD" (Message Of Death. Yes, I just made that up.)

I tried to up vote a post and the MOD popped up. I did what any normal person would do, I tried again and again and maybe again.- THIS WAS MY 1ST MISTAKE

While banned I surfed the web & found Steemd.com its a website that tells you the bandwidth of any Steem user and any given time. It seemed that the more I tried to use bandwidth (spamming the vote button) it made the problem worst. - I'm not positive on this but when I checked my bandwidth said -125% .

So I decided to fix the problem by "powering up". Please remember that I only joined a week ago so I have never actually powered up.

I went to my wallet clicked power up and it sent me to block trades.

I tried sending Steem and Steem Dollars and got the MOD AGAIN! - THIS WAS MY 2ND MISTAKE.

Remember : Buying or Powering up Steem takes up bandwidth, if it's sent from your account!

Exactly What To Do If You Get The MOD (Message Of Death)

Instead of wasting hours waiting or trying to send Steem or Steem dollars like I did. Go to BlockTrades , click the drop down and send ANY coin in exchange for Steem Power except Steem or Steem Dollars.

click drop down

bt2.png
select coin from drop down

After sending the coin you may have to wait a few mins but once it's received, BlockTrades will transfer the Steem Power in your account.

When this happens the "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded. Please Wait To Transact Or Power Up" error will no longer be there!

If you're wondering I sent about $1 worth of LTC to fix the problem. -Hope this helps!

For those who are wondering how bandwidth allocation is calculated:
(max_virtual_bandwidth * (vesting_shares + received_vesting_shares) / total_vesting_shares) / 1000000

While max_virtual_bandwidth is calculated :
number_of_blocks_per_week * maximum_block_size * current_reserve_ratio.

current_reserve_ratio fluctuates in response to new transactions.

Your vesting_shares are more or less steem power and received_vesting_shares is your delegated steem power.

So in conclusion the total bandwidth you get allocated depends on how much of the total steem power you have and the amount of transactions inside the blockchain in the last week.

Hope this was helpful :)

Thanks! I knew someone knew the answer.

Great post! I have been blogging about my bandwidth problems.

I am new here on Steemit. Looks like i have a lot to learn. For example... i didn´t get what steem power is

Yea, there is definitely a learning curve.

Keeping it simple: Steem Power is basically Steem that has been invested or "Powered -Up" into the platform. The more Steem Power you have the more your vote is worth.

-Hope this helps.

Quite an impresseive post for a week old Steemian, can learn a lot from you.

Kinda shocked myself lol.

Thanks a lot!

I'm following you now, watch out, I'm expecting you to keep up the standards hehehe
