Good question! I think maybe for me happiness is a decision... I plan on having a good day - bad things can happen, but if I have made the decision to have a good day, the bad things are just a "bump in the road".
But really in the end happiness comes from knowing that God loves me, and it doesn't matter if nobody else in the world does! That gives me confidence when I start to feel uncertain or alone. Knowing that makes it possible for me to decide to have a good day no matter what happens!
Happiness, for me, is the feeling that I am accomplishing all that my heart is asking me to do. Perhaps not even 'accomplishing' it so much as knowing that I am putting time, effort and passion towards doing those things that I know will make a difference for my own life and for others.
Happiness is an overall feeling of accordant satisfaction and gladness of my existence, despite day-to-day situations, opportunities, and getting past obstacles.
