This is my entry for #beautifulsunday hosted by @ace108. On Sunday, I wanted to be by the river and walked in a temple at the same time. So, my destination was Wat Yannawa, a few minutes walk from the skytrain station : Taksin. I went there by late afternoon so the winter lighting was not very good.
To my surprise, the temple was very quiet on a Sunday which was very different from the crowded atmosphere when I was last here with two Steemit friends from Finland. They were here on a busy Loy Krathong day when Thai people would be launching their banana boats on the river. This time I could leisurely walked towards the pier at the back of the temple in peace and quiet. I was attracted by three big husky dogs, one was being scolded by a monk; I wonder what he had done wrong. These big dogs are so docile and followed the monk like small puppies. ( I later saw the dog’s footprints on wet cement floor! One husky had been running wild around the temple.)
Yannawa temple is over two hundred years old with a very interesting history. This temple is about two hundred years old; originally it was a small temple built during Ayutthaya period. During the Reign of King Rama I, some villages in a small town in Burma called Tawai came to take refuge in Siam because of internal conflict. King Rama I gave the land in this area to this group of Tawai villagers to build their home and livelihood. This temple’s ground was used by these villagers to rear their buffalos a d it had become a big market for buffalos. The temple was then known as Wat Kork Kway which means temple where there is buffalo shelter. King Rama I ordered a new Ordination Hall to be built as the old structure became dilapidated.
During the Reign of King Rama III, the Ordination Hall or Ubosod had been renovated and a model of a life size Chinese merchant ship was constructed on the temple ground. The King was afraid that later generations of Siamese would forget about the important role of these Chinese designed trading ships as people tend to follow Western culture and fashion. At one end of this ship is a small shrine room with antique Buddha statues; there are two small Jedees or Pagoda in the middle and at the other end.

My visit reminded me of that crowded Loy Krathong day when @gamer00 and @daabi2006 came along to launch their banana boats on the river. That day the temple was full of people, food stalls, games stalls, flowers and Buddha statues for people to offer flowers and take their selfies. We were quite overwhelmed by the flow of people in the temple.
I caught my two friends coming down from the Chinese boat.
It was rather sad for me to see that those people on the temple did not renovate or repair the Ordination Hall (Ubosod) for many years and let it fall into pieces. The original roof had so many holes on it that a metal roof had to be put on top of the old roof. All the beautiful plastered details along the door and window frames have become fragmented. Luckily the big Buddha statue inside the Hall is still in good condition.

All these new buildings with a mixture of Western structure and a Thai design on top represented an effort to imitate the design of the Royal Grand Palace. They do look rather imposing and impressive. But I wish they had spent half the building budget on renovating the old Ubosod! It saddened my heart to see this new generations of monks not being appreciative of the old King’s concern and sacrifice for Siam. The historical seat where King Rama III used to sit and watch the construction of the model of Chinese ship was left in a poor state. There is a Thai plague telling people that this was where the King monitored the construction of the ship model.
Well, this quiet walk around the temple taught me about Buddhist teaching on impermanence. I had a nice time at the pier, no more crowded visitors jostling for places to launch their banana boats. This is a nice spot to enjoy the sunset and busy river scenes, and observe how life goes on till another day.
วันอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมาเราอยากไปเดินเบ่นที่วัดและริมแม่น้ำพร้อมๆกัน เราจึงเดินทางไปวัดยานนาวาที่อยู่ไม่ไกลจากท่าน้ำสะพานตากสิน และสถานีรถไฟฟ้าตากสิน เรามาเดินเล่นที่นี่ก็ทำไห้คิดถึง ว่าครั้งก่อนที่มาวัดนี้ เราพาเพื่อนชาวสตีมอิทมาด้วยสองคน. และวันนั้นเป็นวันลอยกระทง ที่วัดกำลังมีงาน ผู้คนเดินกันมากมาย มีร้านอาหารหลายสิบร้าน ร้านเล่นเกมส์งานวัดหลายร้าน มีซุ้มดอกไม้และพระพุทธรูปให้คนสักการะและถ่ายรูปด้วย. แต่วันนี้กลับเงียบเหงาไม่มีคนมาวัดเลย เราเดินเล่นอย่างเงียบสงบอย่างสบายๆ

ที่วัดมีรูปปั้นในหลวงรัชกาลที่3 ที่ทรงให้สร้างแบบจำลองสำเภาจีนไว้กลางวัด เพราะเกรงว่าคนรุ่นหลังจะไม่รู้ว่า เมืองสยามเจริญรุ่งเรืองด้วยการค้าขายกับคนจีนโดยสำเภาจีน ท่านเกรงว่าต่อไปคนจะต่อเรือแบบฝรั่งกันหมด ทำให้สำเภาจีนหายไปจากความทรงจำ ในหลวงรัชกาลที่3 ได้ให้ชื่อวัดใหม่ว่า วัดยานนาวา
วัดนี้เดิมทีมีมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา ในสมัยรัชกาลที่1 ชาวทวายจำนวนมากมาขอลี้ภัยในสยาม. ในหลวงจึงพระราชทานให้ที่ดินแถบนี้ให้ตั้งรกราก ชาวทวายใช้ที่บริเวณวัดเป็นที่เลี้ยงควาย และกลายเป็นแหล่งแลกเปลี่ยน และซื้อขายกระบือ จึงพากันเรียกว่าวัดคอกควาย ต่อมาจึงมีการมีการให้สร้างพระอุโบสถ และเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นวัดคอกกระบือ. ในสมัยรัชกาลที่3 มีการทำนุบำรุงโบสถ์ขนานใหญ่และสร้างเรือสำเภา แต่ปัจจุบันสภาพของโบสถ์โบราณดูแย่มาก เพราะไม่ได้รับการบูรณะมานานหลายสิบปี เราดูแล้วก็รู้สึกเสียดายเป็นอย่างยิ่ง โชคดีที่พระพุทธรูปในโบสถ์ไม่ได้ชำรุดเพราะหลังคาโบสถ์รั่ว งานปูนปั้นฝีมือโบราณแตกกระเทาะหมดทุกจุด ทำให้เห็นถึงความเป็นอนิจจังของสรรพสิ่ง
เราไปที่ริมแม่น้ำเพื่อดูพระอาทิตย์ตก และถ่ายรูปไว้ดูเล่น ตอนนี้ไม่มีผู้คนมาลอยกระทงเหมือนวันก่อน ทุกอย่างสงบเงียบมาก. มีคนไม่กี่คนที่มาถ่ายรูปที่ท่าเรือ ท้องฟ้าหน้าหนาวไม่ค่อยจะใสนัก คงมีฝุ่นขนาดเล็กลอยเต็มท้องฟ้านั่นเอง สถานที่นี้เหมาะกับการมาดูพระอาทิตย์ตก และเรือที่แล่นไปมาในแม่นํ้าเจ้าพระยา ดูการเปลี่ยนแปลงของชีวิตในแต่ละวัน

Next time you are in Bangkok, you have to drop me a line. I’ll take you to temples where you could actually feel very good vibes and energy! I go there to refresh my mind and body often!
Some old Chinese shrines are also very holy. I guess those old Chinese ancestors must have been praying long hours in these shrine rooms.
