Israeli aircraft over the weekend reportedly sprayed herbicides, chemicals allegedly aimed at suppressing the growth of agricultural crops along the border with the Gaza Strip.
"These chemicals cause damage to agricultural crops and endanger agricultural land," said Nizar al-Wahedi of the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture as reported by Middle East Monitor.
Nizar said the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture is not aware of the composition of the chemical used by Israel. But further investigation is still done by related parties.
"Israel has no right to spray herbicides on Palestinian farmland," he said.
Nevertheless, this report was disputed by the Israeli side. According to an Israeli NGO called Gisha, the spraying operation by the aircraft aims to remove unneeded weeds and weeds along the border with the Palestinian territories.
Currently, up to 44,000 Palestinians work in agriculture which contributes to about 11 percent of the workforce in the region
Meanwhile, as home to nearly two million Palestinians, the Gaza Strip continues to experience tensions under the Israeli blockade that has plagued the region since 2007.
