If there is a country whose culture is starkly contrasted by its international image, it has to be Pakistan. Pakistanis all over the world often face the dilemma of explaining what their culture really entails, thanks to years of news media exaggeration and agenda setting. Beyond democratic and economic disappointment, dwells a world of Pakistani civil society that works resiliently against all odds to keep what matters the most intact: its vibrant culture. Let’s try to get to know Pakistan a little better.

Diversity of PAKISTANI Culture

The society and culture of Pakistan (Urdu: ثقافتِ پاکستان‬‎ S̱aqāfat-e-Pākistān) comprises numerous ethnic groups: the Punjabis, Saraikis, Pothwaris, Kashmiris, Sindhis in east, Makrani in the south; Baloch, Hazaras and Pashtuns in the west; and the Dards, Wakhi, Baltis, Shinaki and Burusho communities in the north. The culture of these Pakistani ethnic groups have been greatly influenced by many of its neighbours, such as the other South Asians, Turkic peoples as well as the peoples of Central Asia and West Asia.

Pakistan has four provinces, with each having its own culture, traditions, dialect and palette of food and art. This cultural diversity stems from the ethnic variation causing it to have profound and long lasting effects on the entire culture as a whole.

*If you travel across the entire country, crossing over to each different province is almost like going to a new country where you will notice the difference in the way people look, dress, speak and behave. *
