After much speculation and hype surrounding the June 1st announcements, it is now official.
The Voice is the latest entrant into the world of blockchain based social media. Dubbed a "Steemit Killer" by none other than Dan Larimer himself, the EOS based application is going to garner plenty of attention.
The details are sketchy as of now although I am sure more will emerge over the next few weeks. Bloomberg reported on the matter stating that "A blockchain-based social network could potentially give users more control over their posts and photos".
The challenge, also stated in the article, is the question of whether such a social media platform can succeed while being financially viable. Block. One has a 3B chest meaning it can fund a great deal. EOS held an ICO that raised over $4B.
Many worried that this application could be the end of Steemit and Steem. Dan, himself, posted repeatedly throughout the last month what his thoughts were about both Steemit Inc and the Steem ecosystem. Without naming names, he did take shots at a particular someone who ran Steemit Inc in a way that enriched himself while screwing over the community.
Personally, I believe that any publicity that is generated because of this is a benefit. The entire industry is on the upswing and EOS is one blockchain that gets attention.
The fear that it will destroy Steem or what is being developed on here is a bit far-fetched in my opinion. There are 7B people in the world with roughly 30K, give or take, on Steem. That means there is a huge market left to tap into.
Another factor is in all this is people showed the willingness to use many different applications that are similar. Few are strictly users of on type of social media. YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter are the biggest one with many people having accounts with all three. Throw in Instagram, WhatsApp, Viber, and KIK and we see the number jump to over half a dozen.
Ultimately, I feel that we will laugh about the concept of different blockchains down the road. This is why blockchain tribalism makes little sense. At some point, people are going to use applications, having little to no idea what blockchain they operate upon. Couple this with interoperatbility that will allow applications to operate on different chains providing token portability, and we can see the basis for a new Internet.
At the end of the day, I would hope that Dan drops his obsession with Ned. In the last 6 months, we saw some reorganization within Steemit Inc which pushed Ned out of the spotlight. At the same time, Dan is a big enough fish that he should operate on a different scale. Ned is not the fish Dan need to focus upon but, rather, Zuckerberg. This is the true foe that presents a danger to humanity.
If the Voice can be a force against the Facebook family of surveillance and corruption, then I am all for it. We need as much ammunition as we can get in this standoff.
Besides, you would think that people would understand that, in the world of blockchain, it is not easy to kill something off. Companies come and go yet the underlying chain, especially one with a strong community, keeps on going.
Look at how many times Bitcoin was pronounced dead.
Steem just keeps on chugging along like a bunch of frat boys with a keg on a Saturday night.

Nicely written! I've discussed this social media of EOS for a while with people now, and I'm coming to the same conclusion as you. Why on earth do we look at this as a bad thing? This means that more people will Google "blockchain" and "social media together", which in return could give both Steemit and all the steem dApps more views. Let's focus on doing our best here, and not worry too much about EOS. 7bn people is a lot. EOS could take 1bn and there's still plenty left for us
Agree re ..more people will Google "blockchain" and "social media together"...

I am watching the stream as I write this and it is nothing outbof the ordinary and even as it has great ideas, nothing that cannot be replicated or used among more than one platform.

I watched it too.
The Digital ID is the most exciting aspect although little was mentioned about it.
Will have to check out what the sign up process is to verify uniqueness and individuality.
Such a big stage for not that much content either. Not even the Vision capabilities are built out much. I respect what they are doing but Steem should be able to leverage first mover advantage.

Indeed, the first mover advantage is strong especially in social. Steem has a big active community, which is the best sort of lock-in you can have. People want to belong to a group.

It's also the most problematic
What about RUON?
RUON is going to be on the BEOS blockchian, which is a fork of EOS. It is a middlechain between Bitshares and EOS. RUON is another appealing application focusing, it looks like, on mobile. The project is concentrating its efforts on providing money to the 3rd world and ending global poverty.
There are going to be many of them appear on the scene over the next couple years. As we see with Steem, it is highly likely there are a number of ones one each blockchain.
This is good IMO. I think the problem is a lot of people are looking for one singular solution for things, but this a rather old way of thinking. There can be a variety of social media services that offer similar features though cater to a different audience or market; we don't need one type of facebook, reddit, instagram, etc for all.
Decentralization is the main social theme that is taking place so the more the better really. Of course there maybe only one that rises to the top but why does that necessarily matter? EOS can be the Microsoft of crypto, Steem the Linux, and ethereum the Apple.

Agree, this seems to be a good thing for Steemit, at least for now, since... Steemit works now, and that is more valuable than "This other thing will work soon." Heh.
Cheers.
Some people just really can't let go of the "your chain vs my chain" mentality. Like you said we use multiple social media not just one.
Soon people will realize that they can monetize their content on multiple platforms that will be better than our current models.
Steem is growing into a hydra with new dapps and businesses coming online. Long term Steemit will just be a piece of the bigger Steem puzzle.
We are the blockchain's frat boys😁

The more they claim that it’s a Steem killer the better it gets. It gets attention for us for free essentially. You also can’t kill something like this; they have lots of money but they don’t have the communities that have been built on here over the years. I don’t sweat them at all, I thank them for the attention.
