Zappl Replacement: Microblogging On Steem

in #busy6 years ago

Before started here, I must say I posted in error yesterday. The nice thing about reading the comment section is that one learns something.

I stated that @steemmonsters was not connected to the blockchain and that the site operated on it's own. It turns out that the gaming application does interact in a number of different ways. Perhaps they will put together a post explaining it all to us.

Thus I misspoke about that.

Last week we got on the State of the DApps website. This is going to really help Steem in a number of different ways. The exposure that we get could really draw attention. As I was going through the rankings, I noticed something.

Here is a snapshot of the top listing.

What is exciting is that there are 6 Steem Applications in the top 20. This is the best we had so far and they seem to be moving up. The other day I wrote about supporting the Steem applications. One thing all of us can do is click on an app on the site and give an upvote and comment on the right hand side. We do not know how the ranking system works but it does appear that upvotes do play into it.

One other thing that caught my attention is the application Steemblr.

It says a microblogging platform. I had not heard of it so I decided to check it out.

There did not seem to be much on the @steemblr account but I did see the developer on State of the Dapps. It looks like updates are being done and shared by @snwolak. The latest one came 5 days ago.

I was concerned this was a dead applications but it just seems like there is very little activity.

Looking at the site, here is what it looks like.

As you can see, this is true microblogging akin to Twitter. I do not know the word limit although it is bigger than that site allows. People can post pictures, YouTube videos, and write text. This is great for quick messages.

Be forewarned, in reading through the developer's posts, this is a work in progress. It is operational along with some bugs. There can be a problem with getting signed on. Individuals have the option of using Steemconnect or you can post using an email. The later will not post to the blockchain although there is discussion about posting through the Steemblr account.

I had difficulty trying to log on myself. In one of my browsers, it is locked up telling me it is setting up profile on a blue screen. It is giving me flashbacks to Microsoft's blue screen of death.

In my mind, this is wonderful news. I was disappointed to see Zappl disappear. I think a social media chain needs microblogging. We see the success of Twitter and know that people like the idea of sending out quick thoughts. It seems like Steemblr will allow this. I went through a few of the developer posts and it seems they are adding more to it.

It might end up being a nice blend of Twitter and true blogging.

Check out https://steemblr.com/ to give it a try. I would be interested in feedback for those who do get it working. I know one who said she was able to. This might be right up @techwizardry's alley since he seems to be posting articles people are liking.

Please post your experience in the comment section. I, along with others, am interested to see how it works.

Just another feather in the Steem cap.

If you found this article informative, please give an upvote and resteem.

steemblr is probably in response to tumblr getting ridding of all porn related posts by Feb 2nd if I am not mistaken... all those freaks and geeks will need somewhere censorship resistant to post their content... at least with steemblr they'll earn per post lol

What happened to Zappl?

It just vanished.

Magic!

But what about Zappl? :)

It vanished. No word at all.

I was wondering what happened to Zappl I was trying a bit ago to use their app and it was just the spinning wheel of death. I’m going to cruise over and give steemblr a try. Thanks for sharing this info.

Zappl was impractical. You needed a title and every "tweet" would show up as a new post on your feed which is really annoying. If you didn't put a title, a title would be automatically generated as a random string of characters. Musing.io did something genius by making posts on there a comment so you don't need to clutter up your feed. I am not sure if Zappl considered that.

I wish app developers would stop naming their steem dapps after an already popular app or site. It just really devalues the image as it looks and.sounds like a cheap knockoff. I think an original name will do wonders to make people think it is something brand new and innovative as opposed to a steem rip off of something. All the best to them

Even SteemIT borrowed from ReddIT.

Thank you for writing a post about steemblr, I never thought about it as an alternative to the zappl, rather for tumblr, when I started development zappl still existed. But looks like it's an alternative now.

Individuals have the option of using Steemconnect or you can post using an email.

For this feature you need to wait 2-3 weeks, its still in development.
Steemblr will become hybrid app with blockchain and non blockchain post. Hopefully it will bring more users to steem.

Cheers!

This is really informative post.

I think it looks a lot like Tumblr. Very interesting!

Ah ok. I am not much of a Tumblr so I really don't know what that site looks like.

It is highly popular so trying to mirror that might not be a bad idea.

Yes, particularly with the porn ban on Tumblr with a lot of people looking for a new "home".

It might be perfect timing for this project.

It’s tumblr on Steem. The name gives it away. :D

And so does the design.

As I posted below, I am not much of a Tumblr user so I missed that connection.

That is helpful since @partiko is saving tens of thousands of NSFW Tumblr accounts.

That might hold interest to them.

Tumblr was memes before memes went viral. But it also hosted for a long time several serious/official blogs. Here’s a nice lists of memes and serious blogs on tumblr in 2013.

I thought even Twitter had their blog on Tumblr for a period. The design crowd took very quickly to Twitter and many web designers used to write on Tumblr.

Nike also had two campaigns on Tumblr, it once was also a serious blogging platform and awesome for virality. No week would pass without buzzfeed using it for yet another meme compilation.

Addendum: This was an official campaign blog for 2012: http://barackobama.tumblr.com

Actually i will love esteem to come before steemmonster

Esteem was kind of laggy last time I used it.

Thank you so much for participating the Partiko Delegation Plan Round 1! We really appreciate your support! As part of the delegation benefits, we just gave you a 3.00% upvote! Together, let’s change the world!

I tried it using the Quote option:
https://busy.org/@preparedwombat/6e9a8ee8-8260-4cfe-b185-8363006b5913u02x93

The interface is a bit buggy. Where I entered the text, words were chopped off (font leading was too tight). Also, the tag that I entered does not display from either Steemit or Busy, only the #steemblr tag shows up.

I’ve never used tumblr so don’t know how closely it mimics that service.

Hello, thanks for trying out steemblr. You are right about quote interface it need some rework.
If you want tags to be shown you have to submit each tag by pressing enter or submit button on smartphone.

Tried out steemblr this moment. No problem login in from Brave browser. Made two posts with pictures. The only problem was that I was only able to add text as a title and not in the description which was still fine if this is microblogging. Loking at the DApp name maybe steemblr is meant to imitate Tumblr and not Twitter?

About the Steem Monsters thing, you are actually somewhat right about it running on its own website. It does interact with the blockchain in a similar way to steem-state does, posting transactions to indicate actions (steem-state was partially inspired by SM and its methods) here's a Steem Monsters transactions in steemd:

which is sm_team_reveal custom_json transaction type, which has some data of:

{
"trx_id":"b1d7375df592162a61d3f1b726173884e5b49a37",
"summoner":"C1-5-2YO11FWTZK",
"monsters":["C1-8-EDFE79Q400","C1-68-0LU0PNUKW0","G1-1-7TXNIMTE6O","G1-4-GKOAFA4T5C","G1-9-NRMMI3IL3K"],
"secret":"d7igSyIFip",
"app":"steemmonsters/0.4.4.1"
}

This actually includes NFTs and everything! Steem Monsters is 99% there to full decentralization, but misses one key step which brings it all down and makes it centralized... Only the Steem Monsters company can run a node! That's right, if they simply open-sourced and released their Steem Monsters node application, it would be a fully decentralized game... That's my only big gripe with SM...
