Starting to notice a considerable uptick in spam messages I am getting from all kinds of bots and weird traders.

Is this a sign that maybe steemit is becoming more and more popular? I cannot imagine what its going to be like in a year or two. I wont even be able to read the feed. Maybe if we have a feature to hide messages below a certain value we can actually start making money from getting spammed lol

When people say bots do you mean there is a website where you can buy social media bots? and there's bots for steemit?

Or are people legit scripting bots into some api and coding some stuff I don't fully understand...

Or by bot do you mean drone people who spam or copy and paste over and over just milking anything they can get?

Personally I just ignore them, occasionally flag a few who have a bot upvote them.

*upvoted for visibility

honestly I dont know if its a bot or drone people. But if you look at my message feed you can see its getting a lot more active lately.

Good post! Maybe we can post more and help each other together! I'll vote you you vote me :) :) !!

I am not even talking about this kind of bot post. Its more about the ones that send me sbd to promote some kind of service.

oh i get those every few hours too, they're awesome! Free money!

such a small amount. I say we bump this shit up to like 0.01 as the min to receive messages! :D

Why with hold votes for this post?

Steemit is a house of cards. The bots come from witness and developers for various reasons. I keep a tighter follow list and happy to unfollow anyone that gets out of line. I'm dubious about the legitmacy of the Alexa ranking in relation to real new user retention cause new users don't stay long.

You say real users dont stay long? Do you have any data to show on that? I'd like to see.

I've not personally done the data but it's from lengthy Discord discussions amongst witness' and developers on Steemit. New user retention is Steemit's biggest problem, but the focus is on SMT and a colour change.

Its probably because when people show up they are bombarded with low quality content and nobody takes them seriously or upvotes them. The main misconception is you have to pay for bot upvotes to do anything.

That's true, but the curation thing is kinda broken/dead/manipulated. I spoke to a long time witness today who explained how the early days were a different story. Bots are almost essential to build steem power. I'm not posting shit but I'd like to get to a place where I don't need bots or upvote accounts anymore. Those with niche content don't get anywhere. It's essential until they reach a point where get engaged supportive followers or they can upvote themselves.

The thing is, this tends to be a problem for all platforms where the goal is to make money. Try being a Youtuber or a twitch streamer and you will tend to run into the same problems. Discouragement ect.

With steemit you do at least have the option to self upvote but that's kind of weird honestly. I wonder what Dan has in mind for the steemit competitor on EOS. I BET you that the problem is the people on the platform and not the platform itself.

We need people with tons of steem power to actively seek out and moderate the platform through a method of positive reinforcement.

An honest system that rewards users could work, but that is what the top witness should be doing and we know that they and steemit inc are not really upholding to that with integrity. EOS may not be a saving grace. Who makes a competitor needs to really think through the whole system again otherwise history will repeat itself. I would upvote back, but I'm very low. Need to recharge.

I do agree with you though. New users who come here see Steemit drama getting $$$ in addition to the low quality content of colour challenges and other rubbish that is neither any hallmark of a would be entrepreneur/ content creator. It takes time to wade through to find your interest. Only those persistent enough tend to make it.

Its up to the Dolphins and whales to actively seek out content creators. But we also need to have people use the platform to simply talk to each other like Facebook as well.

Steepshot is doing well at that. ONO will probably set that standard for "Facebook". A problem is a post needs to be an essay to be worthy of an upvote. This attitude needs to change but Steemit has no bounds. Maybe on EOS simple posts and comments could be capped on rewards so it doesn't get out of hand. Dolphins and Whales won't seek out content. It feels centralised at this point and there's not enough of them that are really supporting niche content to make Steemit a real diverse place for a multitude of people to want to stop by and read / watch stuff.

We already do so :) But it is just dust. The bigger your steem account get, the more of these messages will pop up.
I don't know if it is directly related to the fact that Steem is becoming more popular, I guess it is because you are getting more popular :)

Hiding and filtering posts would be a great feature to steemit. It should be implemented now or then. It feels irritating when a lot of uninteresting posts are gathered in the feed.

Yeah, bot/spam followers are also a big problem because they don't interact with you...

yeah.. When I reached 100 followers and posted new thing I get 8 followers with 25 rep and they didn't make single upvote to me. There should be option to get rid of fake followers are something
