Black swallowtails in our garden!

in #butterfly7 years ago

Its been an amazing few weeks watching these caterpillars turn into black swallowtails in our garden! The first one just broke out of its chrysalis, drying its wings in the morning sun. 😀🐛🦋

We have been looking since the caterpillars left to build their cocoons but only found 2 this morning, one being the shell that this beautiful butterfly left behind. We might wake up early to check on the other tomorrow, it seems to be in the later stages also. 🙀🙀😍

I meant to post a week or so about this, but we had about 15 caterpillars decimate our carrots over about a weeks time. Its been about 10 or 12 days since they stopped eating to find a place to pupate. Check out the short video here

We are going to look carefully for more chrysalises and will post update soon!

Wow what a beautiful butterfly, and those caterpillars a huge no wonder they destroyed the carrots. Thanks for sharing

they did get really big, and pretty much consumed every carrot top before heading out to to work
