After reading my last post you should now be comfortable with purchasing Bitcoin in Canada. Some of the more risky individuals may be now thinking of getting into other cryptocurrencies. You may have been hearing about other popular coins on the rise such as, Ripple (XRP), Stellar Lumens (XLM), Request Network (REQ) and wondering why they aren't purchasable on the same site you purchased your Bitcoins from. Well, there are several factors these exchanges have to take into account when adding a coin such as: Development costs, cost to acquire a substantial amount of seed coins, coin legitimacy and potential legal reasons such as only being able to offer utility tokens vs security tokens.
As the Canadian exchanges grow I believe they will offer a greater variety of coins, but rest assured, there are plenty of international exchanges that are trustworthy and offer great features. Here are a few that I use actively and highly recommend.
Top 3 Popular Exchanges
I would recommend signing up for all three echanges since each will have a different collection of coins. Most of the larger coins are offered on all but some of the smaller ones might only be found on one of them.
Binance is an international exchange hosted n China. They have many of the largest coins on the market and offer low trading fees (0.05% per trade). It also provides users with a mobile app available for iOS and Android.
Kucoin is a multi-cryptocurrency exchange with Service Centers based in China. Kucoin offers trading pairs such as BTC/BCH, BTC/DASH, BTC/NEO, BTC/ETH, BTC/RDN, BTC/LTC, BTC/CVC, BTC/KCS, BTC/RPX, and many more. You can see their fees here.
Cryptopia's focus is on a better user experience for crypto-currencies.
In order to make cryptocurrencies more accessible to everyone they provide mining pools, marketplace, exchange services and a support framework for each coin listed.
Trading fees range from 0.1% to 0.2%.
How to decide what coin to purchase
First of all I am not a financial advisor and this is not financial advice. It's difficult to decide what coin to choose. If you bought $1000 coins randomly in 2017 you could have ended up with $371,383.64 !!!
My strategy to choosing coins is research, research and then more research. Some research tips:
- CoinMarketcap.com - I use CoinMarketcap to find low marketcap coins that have been steadily growing. It provides information such past price history, what markets a coin is trading on, current news and links to each companies websites.
- Read the white paper. On each coin's website they will usually have a link to their whitepaper. This contains the essential information on how the coin will work and provide insight of the future value of the coin.
- Check out the team. Make sure the coin you choose has experienced and reputable team members. Watch out for coins that don't list any details of the team, this is usually a red flag for a scam coin.
With that said here are some of the crypto coins that I am excited for in 2018:
Request Network aims to be Paypal 2.0. Their goal is to be embedded in many sites and anywhere you are doing online transactions. You can pay for a product / service in any currency you want and the receiver gets the currency they prefer. The translation of coins happens behind the scenes and is fueled by REQ tokens.
Oyster Pearl, while having an odd sounding name aims to solve a very common problem. Online Ads. They are building a platform that allows website owners profit off of visitors while at the same time eliminating ads. How this works is that visitors will provide a negligible amount of their CPU power and storage to support a decentralized storage platform. The funds from that platform get paid back to the website owners.
Enjin coin, wants to be the video game currency of the future. Instead of every game using their own in game currency, they can use enjin tokens which gives real value to digital assets.
SpankChain is focused on the adult entertainment industry. They are creating a web platform that accepts and pays in SPANK tokens. The problem they are trying to solve is the lack of acceptance in the adult entertainment industry towards marginalized communities and uncommon kinks!
