My entry this week is a grainy night shot of the Duomo in Milan that I took with my travel phone (a mid 2000s Moto Droid). It wasn’t the perfect camera for a low light shot, but I loved everything about this scene... the wet stone in the piazza, the single bike, and the people casually walking as the rain started to fall harder. I braced my phone on a rail to steady the shot, and I was pretty happy with the result. If I had been carrying a better camera, I would have used it, but I do like something about these low fidelity shots from an old phone. In some ways the low-res, grainy effect gives the image a raw quality that adds to the mood of the photo.
One more really rough shot from the same night below. The gleaming white Duomo stands in the background as young people spill out of a nearby bar. In addition to the grainy effect and the lens flare, the shaky blur helps to convey the energy of the scene (to me at least).
