The Confessions of a Crypto Calvinist

in #calvinism7 years ago (edited)

Allow me to introduce myself. I go by the handle CryptoCalvinist. I am new to crypto currency and old to Calvinism. My goal in writing and posting on Steemit is to express the convergence of these two world shaping structures, crypto and Calvinism.
Calvinism is a misnomer. The word conjures images of witch burning in Salem. In reality Calvinism is a robust worldview which gave the western world many things we now enjoy.
John Calvin, though within a context of medieval Europe, developed a political philosophy which would eventually be called federalism. Calvinism has always prized political decentralization by way of a constitution and the presumption of the image of God and natural inalienable human rights. That code is law and decentralization are familiar concepts to the Calvinist's ear. When I first heard of crypto a few years back it resonated immediately.
Beyond John Calvin himself, many now call themselves neo-calvinists. The most notable of the last century was a man named Abraham Kuyper, who was a pastor, philosopher, newspaper pioneer, and prime minister of the Netherlands. He championed a federalist political philosophy, decentralized the church from the control of the state in the Netherlands and formed the free church (free from government control), and further developed a view of decentralization called sphere sovereignty. Sphere sovereignty means that there ought to be natural decentralizing lines of privacy between different parts of life. For example, the family, education, church, state, medicine, labor, business and other vocational spheres ought to be governed independent of one another. This has been sometimes described as a form of covenantal or federalism applied to all of life.
The tendency of the medieval period, and modernism has been to centralize power into either the church or the state. Examples of this include both Roman Catholic Communion in its "holy" empire, or the protestant early modern view of Erastianism where the civil magistrate chose the religious affiliation of its citizens. Calvinists recognize that politics and religion never mix well. Always, religion when made a wing of political power becomes a bastardized false version of the reality of true Biblical religion.
For all of the reason of being a crypto neophyte and a Calvinist scholar, I desire to join the discussion of Steemit and discuss with all of you the helpfulness of these two world shaping worldviews.
There are always those who regret having not invested in crypto earlier, but I am not a regretful if-I-only-had-just-bought-bitcoin-when-it-was-only-xyz-dollars-person; rather I am thankful that I have been learning and investing. More than anything else, I want to be part of the revolution with all of you. I do not care nearly as much about money or belongings as much as freedom and decentralization and its benefits to the good of mankind.
In your service,
CryptoCalvinist

This post is excellent.

Although I firmly believe in the five points. I would not call myself a Calvinist. I fall into a camp known as Sovereign Grace. I think we are all supralapsarian and reject any notion that stands opposed to Christ's definite atonement for His elect. His death paid for certain sins of certain people and for whom will be made manifest in time.

We judge by the gospel and others confession thereof. We do not judge by performance of law obedience. It is reasonable to assert they that are born of the Spirit will love the brethren but we cannot ascertain the inward state of the heart by outward acts.

Unfortunately, this is where I believe NeoCalvinism has problems as they seem to insist there is some metric form gauging a state of regeneration based on works.

I also believe in decentralization from a theological perspective. This resonates with the liberty that was bought for they that bleive by His most precious blood.

I've noticed a couple of comments where I would like to touch on the Hyper Cal issue. I look forward to getting to know you and your theological convictions!

What is political, social correct may not be spiritual correct.
