The first camera to touch my hands professionally was a Nikon F3 film camera, its known well in the photographic world and held close to many photographers hearts and I can quote Ted Forbes as saying its his one camera of choice if he had only one camera to choose from for use for the rest of his life.
Its been said by many photographers what camera they would use for the rest of their life. But never has it been said “let the camera choose you”.
I have a belief that camera’s have souls and they draw us closer to them for a number of reasons. I’m not the only one to have this thought even the outspoken Jeremy Clarkson thinks that cars he has driven have souls but I believe cameras have much much more.
To pick up a used camera will make my mind wonder. I’ve spent time with a number camera’s and its the little things I’ve thought about including the marvellous history that a camera his witnessed, documented and captured and who has used that camera and what type of photographer they must of been. At the same moment thinking back what you would I give to go back in time to press the shutter button at a Freddie Mercury Queen concert or some historical event. You can only dream about the camera now in your hands as it has now found you to continue its photographic path.
Of all the camera’s I own to this day they all have an amount of wonder and I feel privileged to hold them but for now a Leica has found its way into my hands and chosen me. There have been many memorable moments in my life with using the Leica (A beautiful 35mm film Rangefinder.)
The small collection of camera’s I hold today are as follows ; Leica MP, Leica M7, Canon Canonflex, Canon Canonflex R2000, Canon FT-QL, Canon F-1, Canon F-1new, Canon A-1, Canon 5D Mark III and Sony A7II.
I consider myself merely as the caretaker of these camera’s, I’d like to think that the cameras have chosen me to capture the moment and for when that moment ends will undoubtedly continue its path in choosing another photographer for their life’s goals and adventures. So next time when you find a camera give it a second thought that maybe the camera found you instead.
(One day it would be nice to see on every new camera purchase the outer box scrawled with the words “Let the camera choose you”)
