Weekly Vlog - 100 year old souvenir!

in #camping7 years ago (edited)

Every time I travel outback I try to bring back (without breaking the law or harming the environment) a few souvenirs. It is quite sentimental to me as these serve as a trip memoir. They become great talking points when friends and family come over.

During my recent outback trip (video series coming out soon. Click here to watch the trailer - https://steemit.com/camping/@overlandjournals/7o9fp9gu ) I came across a site where a pub/hotel once existed. The Coward Springs pub existed from 1887 to 1953. Being along the Ghan railway track, back in the day, this was a popular stopover point for travellers as there was not only the pub but also a natural hot water spring to dip into.

Coward Springs today is a well set up camping site. It is at this location I found my travel souvenirs.

Finding mementos like that can be fun and, as you say, a great conversation starter and opportunity to talk about your adventures.

But collecting souvenirs becomes impossible or at least very impractical for those of us that travel full-time. I know full-time travelers that collect stickers or patches or other small things but even that becomes difficult if you travel long enough. For this reason I chose to only keep digital pictures and try to avoid buying or picking up anything that I do not need or really want that will add value on other ways.

I understand what you mean. Eventually, you will need a separate trailer just to carry the souvenirs :D

I also collect stickers. These I stick on the inside of the fourby.

It's all in the name of having a memoir for years down the track. So it's different for each individual.

How long have you been travelling for? Which places have you been to so far?

We have been without a permanent residence for just over 2 years and have spent that time traveling all over the US in our travel trailer. We have no intention of stopping but I think our mode of travel will change over time. I have a dream of both doing international travel carrying all we need in a backpack each and also doing some serious overlanding.

that's awesome. If you come over to South Australia, let me know. Happy to help where ever I can. Perhaps go into the Australian outback together :)

That would be really cool! And I do hope to spend at least 6 months in Australia at some point.
