OG Kush is one of the most famous varieties in the world of marijuana, a legend of cannabis with a great acceptance by the masses, which currently has a record demand in countries like the USA. and some prices for their resinous buds that are unparalleled.
Much has to do with its attractive lemon flavor and fuel, along with a championship power that the favorites of many growers thanks to its powers. We present you in the form of a decalogue to dispel all the doubts you may have about this fantastic variety.
1- The real meaning of the name
There is a great debate about the real meaning of its acronym. Some believe that OG means "Ocean Grown", while others think that it is the abbreviation of "Original Gangster". According to the Dutch seed bank DNA Genetics (which sells this variety) this last term would have been created in the 90s, when the children of the Californian musical group Cypress Hill included it in one of their songs referring to the term 'original gangsta', which is someone who has climbed positions in the ranking of cannabis producers / sellers to become a "boss".
However, the version of "Ocean Grown" ("grown next to the ocean") is the most plausible and the one that finds greater acceptance among professional growers. This meaning is due to a Californian grower (named John, resident in Grass Valley) who at the end of 1993 got a cutting of the famous ChemDog, which he shared with two other growers: Jerry (from Dibble Creek) and Harold (Putz) of Sunset Beach, in Orange County. Putz put the crossing male that carried a secret ingredient: it was a hybrid of Lemon Thai and an Old World Paki Kush.
The first buds of this marriage began to circulate through L.A counties 1995 and someone who tried them told Putz that the taste was so good that it could only come from a Kush that had grown in the mountains. Putz laughed and replied "this Kush has grown in the ocean, brother." The label was thus stuck and since then it is known as OG Kush. At the end of 1996, Putz sold part of the seeds to some growers in the San Fernando Valley, where the current phenotype of this variety is located.
2- Then come from sunny California?
Indeed, the OG Kush was created after 3 generations of stabilization in the San Fernando Valley, near Los Angeles and is the best-selling variety in Southern California (or SoCal as the Americans say). In fact it has become the No. 1 in the US market and, therefore, in the head of the largest Cannabis market in the world.
3- What you are really smoking
The term "Kush" is commonly used to refer to a subset of strains from Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, near the Hindu Kush mountain range. Since this area is known for its pure Indica genetics, the name OG Kush leads many to suppose that this variety should be at least predominantly Indica. They are not wrong: the OG Kush of Dinafem is 75% of Indica genetics and 25% of Sativa.
4- Where exactly is your lineage born?
The two most plausible stories about the genetics of the OG Kush link it to the legendary strain ChemDawg (breeder ChemDog), whose origins in themselves are lost in the last decade of the last century. In this case, the OG Kush of Dinafem is also the result of a crossed ChemDog with a hybrid of Thai Lemon and a Pakistani Kush, this being its genetic equation: ChemDog x
5- Hence its flavor, right?
The flavor is strong and fresh, with sweet notes, concentrated citric acid and with some touches of earth, fuel and spices, giving an irresistible taste to barbecue, something that captivates the Americans like no one else; and that many have had a drink of lemon rubs mixed with the ashes of a summer barbecue. An unmistakable flavor that influences, along with its power, in its high final price.
6- Your power! Myth or Reality?
According to the analyzes carried out in laboratories in California (which is where this particular phenotype comes from), the OG Kush of Dinafem has up to 24% THC and 0.23% CBD. And the effect is intense, hitting suddenly with a powerful physical and mental buzz of euphoric trance. Some describe it as an energetic rush while others find it narcotic; but everyone agrees that it is strong to the point of being potentially debilitating.
7- The friend of the rappers ... and of the doctors
Although the urban legend says that its use by bands and rappers corresponds to its high level of CBD, so as not to feel pain in case of being wounded in a hypothetical shooting, the truth is that the OG Kush offers a deep muscular relaxation and provides a relief lasting a wide range of ailments, including nausea, headaches, depression and anxiety. With OG Kush, patients usually claim to have achieved improvements in their migraines, attention deficit syndromes and stress-related disorders. Oh the damn stress!
9- That's why it works so well in optimized cultivation
The OG Kush feminized seed from Dinafem has a flowering speed of 55 days (October 10 outdoors) and, being a marijuana variety that branches easily, adapts perfectly to the SCROG or SuperScropping technique, which increases many its performance, provided it is developed in a microclimate suited to their needs. Due to its dominant genetic heritage, this plant is ideal for growing in the mountains of the Middle East, so it will be necessary to try to imitate these conditions as best as possible.
10- A Californian, in short, rich and famous
OG Kush is known as one of the highest-priced varieties on the market, reaching 30 USD per gram. And it has become so popular in the United States that it has even become synonymous with powerful marijuana, increasing its price thanks to the declared use made of it by different singers, rappers, Hollywood characters and even athletes in their rehabilitation. So long did his shadow become, that in 2009 the Republican senator from Illinois, Mark Kirk, introduced an amendment to increase the penalties for trafficking in Kush marijuana, meaning marijuana with a share of more than 15% THC. Kirk's project did not achieve a single support.
