Attention Growers: Week 4 And I'm Getting Ready To Cull

in #cannabis7 years ago (edited)

Of the 13 cannabis plants that I am current growing, 6 are presenting this way at the end of week 4:

I took this picture under 60 X magnification.  I "think" these are pollen sacs which indicate male plants.

This particular strain is Apollo 13  which was supposed to be an auto-flower. Of the 4 (Apollo 13 plants) that I have growing, 3 of them are presenting this way.

I have never grown an auto-flower before so I want to make sure that I am making the correct decision to "kill" these very healthy plants.

What do you guys think? Do You Think This Is A Male Plant?

I welcome your comments. (I'm standing at the ready to be the Grim Reaper with a big-ass knife while listening to Blue Oyster Cult from 1976.)

Wait

because those are not pre-flowers. Females will spit out white hairs, males will grow a ball on a stem, like a grape or berry. ;)

You also have some time. It usually takes a few days to a week, before male flowers open and begin dropping pollen. ;)

Oh, thanks so much for weighing in here. I greatly value your opinion. Here's a picture of its mate (also Apollo 13):

What do you think of this one? (I also thought it was a pollen sack.)

This one is looking like its more male but I'd wait. it will stilll be a while before it will actually drop pollen if it is a male.

Thank you for having a look and sharing your opinion @greengrowgringo!

Anytime. I can't wait to see how your crop turns out.

Possible Male Alert

Ok, this one actually looks more like a pollen sack, yes. See how it's already growing a stem and doesn't have the longer/fluffier top? Yeah, highly suspect. ;)

Don't pluck those just yet. Heres a pic of some Female Super silver haze I have growing with the same thing. I'm not sure what thats called but it could be a female.

these are 'indeterminate' pre-flowers
these look like female flowers with no hairs.
fully male pre-flowers with be a ball on a thin stem.
I have had these suddenly grow hairs and finish deciding they're female
The sex of a cannabis plant isn't absolute genetically, only a predisposition to be female or male.
but given the proper (or improper) conditions and any female can flip sex and pollinate herself.
Same could theoretically happen to males but I dont know if anybody has ever seen this.
I;ve only kept males around long enough to gather pollen, then they get pulled.
Didn't keep them around long enough to see them flip.

If you're only at week 4, you can wait another week or so to be sure! Males will show there sex before females usually. Looking great though!

Oh thanks so much for looking and commenting @dajohns1420. I really appreciate it!
Here's what one of its mates looks like (also Apollo 13, germinated at the same time.)

What do you think of this one? I thought it was a pollen sac, too.

that isn;t a pre-flower. just a 'spur'.
the pre-flower will appear behind the spur.

or now that I stare at it...
might be a tiny female...

@rebeccaryan
I have nothing to add to your post. I just know that you don't want the male pods to open and pollinate the females. If you do. You get a lot of seeds in your buds. I think that is what they call it..
It is easy to tell the males from the female plants. You can see the males before the female plants are ready.
So yes. You have some time.
But, I am not the expert. I just know what I have been told.

Francis

Hahahaha! Thanks. Well Francis, have you ever been told if male pollen sacs look like what my plants look like right now?
Most of the growers (who have already responded) also think I should wait about a week's time and that the males will be unmistakably male before the females are ready.
It just makes me nervous to have even the potential of getting pollen anywhere. In my first garden, once we could identify for sure that we had a male, we moved that plant outside with another female plant. Inadvertantly, when the male started pollinating we either carried that pollen with us to the other plants every time or, it had already pollinated all of them before we decided to move it.
I really want to deal with any males as soon as I can, this time around.

I can't weigh in on whether it's a male or female plant but I can say that the picture is extremely beautiful! I love to see such things under magnification and this is just gorgeous!

About the song...I love that song! I use to have it as a ring tone back when music ring tones were cool. It just needs a lil more cow bell is all 😂

Hahahahaha! Yes!!! This is my life's motto: If in doubt add more cow bell. More cow bell fixes everything...just like duck tape and JB weld (and I hate that I know that, btw). LMAO
And so I simply must add MORE COW BELL:

Hahaha!

Excellent photos and auto colors have advantages and disadvantages @rebeccaryan.

The advantages of auto colors:

  1. Multiple harvests per year. Seeds of autoflowers always bloom automatically. This means that if you start growing at the beginning of the year, then your plants can harvest in the middle of summer. This will allow you to autocouple a new cycle of cannabis cultivation. If spring and summer were favorable, this will allow you to harvest 3 times a year. According to this statement, let's compare cannabis sativa and hemp indigo. Naturally, photoperiodic varieties (sativa and indicator) will grow in spring and summer, and will bloom only when the light day is shortened. It's around the end of the summer. This will allow you to collect only one crop within one year, since you are depending on the time of the year.

Disadvantages of auto colors

  1. Less harvest. Seeds of hemp Autoflowers grow small plants in comparison with photoperiodic cannabis varieties. It is very convenient for the secret cultivation of cannabis. But, unfortunately, the growth of the plant also affects the yield. Therefore, the yield of car colors is not high.
2.% THC is slightly lower. Due to the influence of cannabis ruderalis, the percentage of THC in autoflowering cannabis seeds is slightly lower than in most photoperiod plants, sativa and indica.

Might Want to Re-Visit Autos

because the yields have significantly increased, the last few decades. The quality (from proper breeders) has also increased significantly. ;)

Thanks for providing this level of detail @serkagan but the reason for this post is to see if other more experienced growers (than myself) think that this plant is a male, based on the plant structures that I have shown in this photo. If I leave males with my females all of them will be pollinated and produce seeds, which I do not want. Do you think this is a male plant?

Most likely, male flowers pollinate female flowers, the main thing is to remove them still closed. But on this drawing you can determine what men's, and what women's :)

Hi rebeccaryan, from what I can tell you have topped the plant and those look like they can be new shoots for leaf growth. I would hang in there for a few days before making a decision. Typically male auto flower plants show there sex at around 4-5 weeks and in my experience females around 6-7 weeks. This varies according to your growing technique and experience. Hydro will mature faster than a organic soil grow for example. I hope this helps :-)

Yes, I have topped these plants. Thanks for taking a look and sharing what you think @bitminter. I inadvertently let my first garden become pollinated as I was learning what a male looks like. I an trying like not repeat that mistake with this garden (if I can help it). I produced what felt like a thousand seeds and I'm tired of sorting them. LOL!

Make sure you spray everything down with water, if you haven't already. Pollen hangs around for forever, unless it gets wet and germinates. ;)

That pictures looks female, so far. :D

Great information! Thank you for adding it. I was very careful @thecleangame, I used 10% acetic acid (cleaning vinegar) at full strength to clean EVERYTHING.
Walls, ceiling, floors, light, fans, vents and trays, before I started this garden.

Thumbs-Up! :D

hahaha yes sorting can be a pain in the butt and accidentally smoking a seed can be nasty and make you cough your lungs out! :-) I just did a quick post on the topic of feminization and shared your post.

Here is the link: https://steemit.com/marijuana/@bitminter/a-natuaral-way-to-feminize-cannabis-seeds-for-your-next-grow

Hope it helps keep us posted I am almost positive you have a female there but I could be wrong. Cheerz

Personally, I'm Still Waiting on Proof

ethlyene is a good way to produce feminized seeds (peel gives off ethylene). The last thing you want is your prized females to rip off their skirts, at the first sign of a hot day at the beach, and let their balls hang out.

The Proven Way

to get feminized seeds, is to create feminized pollen with ST or Colloidal Silver Solutions. I'll be posting a HOWTO in the next couple weeks. I have a reversed Early Dane which is about to start dropping feminized pollen in a few days. ;)

Go Be Awesome!

I have read about colloidal silver for doing just what you are talking about. Please send me a comment when you post your article. I don't want to miss it with everything that I have got going on at the moment. ;)

I will do my best. :) I'm high functioning autistic, so even notes don't help at times. lol :D

Thank you so much! I have upvoted and resteemed it. It's fantastic information. Thanks for sharing this. ;)
Here's a photo of another Apollo 13 (out of the same group of seeds):

I thought it was a pollen sac, too. What do you think?

i think you should let it grow more

Thank you for taking a look and weighing in on the debate @kriter.

Great post, Citizen movements have done much for the legalization of cannabis in countries that have taken the plunge. But this evolution has also been driven by the many health benefits of cannabis. Research on cannabis is still insufficient, but cannabis has been proven beneficial for the treatment of nausea and neuropathic pain, resulting from damaged nerves.

Thanks for comment @machhour. Lots of research has been completed about the medicinal benefits of the cannabis plant in many countries around the world. Israel leads the way but what this post is about, is determining if this plant is male or not.
I am having a hard time deciding if it is and that is why I have asked this question about whether others think it's a male or not.
I don't want to produce seeds, if I can help it.

It's new every Saturday night. Did you make the cut?

.

I'm so sorry! I was away from the interwebs this week and got behind on curating. I'm so glad you found some answers quickly!

No worries...it's all good. Yes, I went with partly my gut and partly consensus. Lol!

It seems that this is the result of receiving or abandoning

that much zoom and its look epic

Very nice!! Love the "Grim Reaper" tag!! :-D

wow..that looks pretty cool. I've never seen one that up close lol. I'm not knowledgeable enough to offer an opinion...just liked the pic LOL.

Hi @tamaralovelace!Thanks for taking a look and commenting I'm at a critical time juncture with these plants. If they are male they must be killed immediately or they will pollinate all the females and produce a tonne of seeds. I don't want to get into seed production with this particular garden but I also don't want to be over zealous with my knife either. LOL!

Ooo timing is everything then! I'm really interested in the process of growing and also using the oils you mentioned on my son Rodney. It isn't fully legalized here in FL yet but I have no doubt it will be soon. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

Oh, it would be a wonderful crop for you to be able to grow for yourself and Rodney. Is it legal for medical reasons already?

Yes, just recently! I'm sure we'll be following along in the footsteps of the rest of the world eventually lol...good ol' Florida, always a few years behind the times :D I think it would be a wonderful addition to the medicine chest!

Rodney would likely have no trouble getting his medical license for it.
Here in Canada, we have 2 tiers of licensing. One is a license that lets you buy cannabis and the other let's you grow. A person can designate a care-giver to grow on their behalf. If FL has the same laws, Rodney could apply and designate you as his caregiver and grower. If he did get a license it would at least let him have access to topicals and oils for pain and sleeping.

Yes, that's exactly what he needs. He was having trouble sleeping and when we talked with the doctor, he said because of the brain injury, narcotic sleeping pills were contraindicated, leaving not too many options. He then prescribed trazadole an old anti depression med. I am really not much of a pill fan. He has some naturals but nothing medical wise. I need to look into that.

@rebeccaryan - Ma'm this is the 1st time I heard about male plant :) I'm surprised by it.... If you kill this plant what will happen ma'm?.... Females will angry with your decision ;) That's what we called as nature ;)..... You are en expert in this subject... So I can't provide you an opinion ma'm.... To get more audience, I wish to ReSteem your post.

Removing males now, means that the females can focus on producing resin which contains the medicinal qualities of the plant and why I am growing them in the first place. Killing males, (although painful to do because they are health and I have invested time, $ and resources to grow them) will result in hopefully a higher production yield for my remaining female plants.

@rebeccaryan,
If you have a license to plant cannabis, if you have male and female plants, I don't think you need to kill them! You can let them sex and can get their seeds! In that way you can keep growing the amount of plants you have and you can extract more oil by using it! Anyway this is just my stupid opinion! I know you have plans for them :D

Cheers~

@theguruasia, what you have stated is true. However there are pros and cons to the decision to let males live. Yes seeds will be produced but they will come with a much lower resin (or medicinal) production. The seeds won't heal, the resin will. :)

i have no idea about male and female this category plant. but i suppose to be a male plant.

We think it is too @sheikh27!

So Close!

The femmed Early Dane will be dropping pollen like mad, in about a week! :D
Thought you'd appreciate an update. ;)
