ABUJA – STRONG indications Monday; Nigeria may soon relax laws against planting and consumption of cannabis.
The United Nations ((UN) has approved usage of the drug for medical purposes.
The position of UN on the usage and abuse of drug was declared by Project Officer of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Nigeria, Harsheth Kaur Virk in her presentation at a one day Public hearing.
The hearing, organized by Senator Joshua Lidani, PDP, Gombe South led Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.
It addressed the need to check rising menace of Pharmaceutical drugs abuse among youth in Nigeria.

Great information from you @surfyogi, sure it has some medical usage as well as natural usage too like enhancing hair growth when mixed with hair cream, but I hope when it is approved it will not be abused because that might be a big problem.
Oh really? I need some cannabis then
Wow this is great news.
The government has always been at war with cannabis farmers.
Enough of the injustice weed has suffered in the hands of our government.
In recent times, many cannabis farm has been burnt or taken over by the government in Western Nigeria. Now there will be law to protect farmers from government illegal possession marijuana farm
PAYED FOR BY USA and EU BIG PHARMA, pay the local militia to march in and BURN the farmers crops...
I thought as much. Cannabis is a threat to big PHARMA companies
This is totally outrageous.
Weed is a plant not a terrorist for the government to fight.
Weed is a plant not an epidemic/outbreak for those Big Pharma to pay for its destruction.
It's sad to say this but sometimes the government of Nigeria have misplaced priority. Cannabis is a drug of abuse-agreed. But is is also important in the production of different therapeutic chemical substances by pharmaceutical companies. Let these cannabis farmers be.
Your interest in Nigeria amazes me though. You could come down here for humanitarian services you know😎😎
Looks like I will be prevented from traveling internationally for the summer, than I'm a free man!
Anytime you'll be free to travel, we will be glad to welcome you here 😃
Another great news for Cannabis lovers, I wish it would be used mostly for medicinal purposes, it would make more sense that way.
What we figured out in California (where full legalization for recreational use by adults started this year) is that with simple education, the issues involved with abuse are FAR outweighed by the BENEFITS of legalization. And it's really a NON-ISSUE compared to ALL THE PEOPLE DIEING of OPIATES manufactured by BIG PHARMA COMPANIES!!! (WHICH IS #1 KILLER OF PEOPLE IN USA!)
If same method can be adopted here in Nigeria, then it will be very helpful. We need sufficient education and awareness to really highlight all the health benefits associated with the use of Cannabis. And I totally agree with you @surfyogi when you said that the benefits outweighs the abuse.
I'll have to do research about this to know more about the medicinal benefits, so at least the campaign can start with me over here. Thank you for bringing this to our attention
I couldn't believe this is happening, I really love this piece for it really enlighting me more
I'm from Nigeria and I know what this mean. But Im not totally in support of this because Nigerians usually abuse things, it will really turn to something else now when this is legalized and made law. Soon we will be seeing people with marijuana working the street as they like. I know our people more. I hope this isn't happening for real
Please read my comments above!
These cannabis farmers are the not the problems of Nigeria. The government should focus on more pressing issues like the current killing of Christians in the Northern and Eastern parts of Nigeria. @surfyogi please propagate this whether the outside world will help and come to our aid. I am from Benue State and for the past three months I've not been able to go back home due to ethnoreligious crisis. As I speak, I don't know the whereabouts of most of my family members. 😓😓
Our problem is more than cannabis
I think its sense of abuse is not the priority here...but thanks for your info @surfyogi
this is the positive news as it used as drug addicted, but now it has proven to use as medicine.
All about money.... I wish they'd have a public senate hearing and just listen to one after another people with the dreaded "big c" explain to the gov clowns how their quality of life has improved. Granted not 100% will be positive reviews, but it should be a viable option for many and not just people at the end of their road.
Hello @surfyogi
This news might be a welcome development in some quarters but not too welcome in others. The abuse of this substance bringing about far reaching consequences is what I fear. And our youths, tomorrow's leaders are ever so prone to substance abuse.
@edith4angelseu
I hope this happens sooner than later. Many people depend on this. In some cases it’s a “live or die”. I personally don’t use it, but it doesn’t mean I’m opposing it.
I guess this is great news for us all in Nigeria.
Though the drugs may have been abused in time past.
It also has its benefits.
Thanks always.
We do hope to see you in Lagos soon 😎
Oh yes, of course, some use of the Cannabis may well be for medical purposes, but in my opinion, this is the legalization of drugs at the state level. The corrupt government in Nigeria is on the verge of drug lords, as a result, ordinary people and children will suffer first. Thank you @surfyogi
Great use of Cannabis awesome achievement.. @surfyogi ... One thing has positive and negative side... When we used it positively it good for world....It comes as no shock to anyone who knows cannabis that this is a valuable plant with a lot of benefits. As we bring this plant out of the dark and into the light, it continues to blow our minds – just how great the benefits of cannabis actually are!
wow you explain good too
Thanks for appreciating me.
Wow being seeing this around. Hmmmmm I really need to read more about it. Thank you @surfyogi
Wow.
Even with strict laws, abuse was inevitable. Now they have relaxed the laws, I guess its gonna be worse.
@surfyogi, you really need to see youths taking this stuff like its doctor recommended.
I guess now, everybody is gonna have a medical challenge that would require cannabis.
Let's see how the next days would turn out
When promulgating laws to regulate any substance, the benefits and risks should be weighed and compared. The benefits of cannabis far outweighs the risk. Come to think of it, almost all the drugs used in psychiatryand mental health has cannabis or members of its family as ananactive ingredient. Ask a pharmacist this.
Nigeria please relax the laws on cannabis cultivation soon
Oh No! The number of mentally-derailed persons will increase. We all know the relationship between cannabis and mental derailment. Relaxing the laws is a bad bad idea
Thanks for the initiative @surfogi
I agree to this and it really should be an issue of concern...thanks for sharing..
Steem on.
Cannibis planters will love this news :-). However it should be used moderately and not for anything outside of the medical purposes
Hello @surfyogi, I am from Nigeria and although the laws controlling this cannabis cultivation are so strict and harsh, many young persons are roaming the streets sequel to its abuse. What will then happen when the laws are relaxed. This is not a good idea please. I beg our government. Think twice
then it's not as bad as they think, if the UN has already given the green light, it's that some study has already been presented, I've never had it around, but now that I know it has healing powers I would like to know much more about it, I suffer from severe migraine, maybe it's a good relief for me! I'll look for more information, happy night.
You are doing a great work, sir...👍 I really appreciate you, sir... For your hard work...many people can be safe from many diseases.Salute for your effort sir.☺
This is a great news and a plus for us in Nigeria. I'm happy we are seeing the effect of our awareness about cannabis. All we are asking is for cannabis to be allowed for medical purpose.
We need to intensify our awareness. I call on all Nigerian steemians to join me in this awareness, so that we can achieve this success together
The thousands of videos showing weed helping people with various conditions should at least prove it does help.
The poor guy with Parkinson's disease, shaking and unable to feed himself then he is given a small amount of CBD oil and he's able to feed himself.
For decades, cannabis has been an underground, hidden industry. Mainstream public perception declared the plant a dangerous, psychotropic drug. Now, the herb is well on its way to becoming a daily consumable that perhaps one day will next to Vitamin C tablets on the pharmacy shelf. Over the past few years, the thousands of sick and dying patients helped by cannabis products opened everyone's eyes.
OMG. Let’s wait and see.
I hope they aren’t just talking!
Wow. I'm not sure this would go down well with a lot of people.
I think what UN would have done was to state a particular constituent of the cannabis that's so medicicinal and not spell it out that cannabis itself is medicinal.
Because now that the law has been relaxed, trust me, "weed" consumption is gonna blow up
The government have to step up and save the furture of young Nigerians because the high rate of drug intake in Nigeria is very alarming, where by affecting the people health wise and causing environmental hazard, they is need to make people abreast about the deadly practice because death await them at the corner thanks @surfyogi for sharing information
It is worth remembering that most of the population of the Andes have been chewing coca leaves without harm ( and indeed with some benefit) for centuries. Cocaine is derived from it. In the same way cannabis is a herbal substance that naturally contains elements which are complementary.
oh gereat nws, mazing achuvement
Isn't it time that the UK and the EU cop on, and legalise cannabis? To quote Rolling Stone: While "the US continues to insist that marijuana has absolutely no medical benefit, making commerce exceedingly difficult for anyone working with state-legal weed, Canada began the process of making pot available to all adults as soon as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took office in 2015.
Superb job sir nice post you shared here its very informatic as a doctor i know its really a beneficial drug for many diseases its very good for nausea vomitting during chemotherapy and it better for hiv and aids patient to improve the appetite specially also good in pain muscle pain but carefully use because its addiction leads schezophrenia in some cases now its legal in many countries like america columbia and other some rest
great success for canabies, thanks for share sir @surfyogi
Sir helpful information
Another great step in ending this stupid war against cannabis that has been going for way to long and has cost the world many unnecessary lives and victims.
When we go full cannabis legalization world-wide, we would have also manage to dis-articulate a huge part of criminals income through trafficking.
Wow...! They have just handed free ticket to miscreants who are definitely gonna abuse this privilege!
Watch and see. Nice post, though!
@eurogee
Definitely they are people who will but some will still make good use of it. Its all over
According to research, there is less or no harm in too much usage of cannabis compared to opine
You have a valid point anyways.
This is a good development and good way to boost medical research in Nigeria aside the already known ones
Sir @surfyogi,
That is a great news. Cannabis has pain relieving properties. Everything has good sides and bad sides. We should chose the good sides. Go on sir. Keep sharing. Best of luck sir.
Go ganja! Not a fan but it somehow inspires the rebel inside
Wow....... This is amazing... Heard about how effective it is.
The Truth is that, we do KNOW that it has medicinal properties!
However, it is the quantity and the exaggeration of its use that does become then recreational and not medicinal.
The world seems scared of it, thinking that the whole population will use it?!
While people may try it, that doesn't mean subsequently they will become hooked.
Alcohol and tobacco are more adictive and destructive (on exaggeration) than MaryJuana is.
Quite frankly, i would rather have people use this herb than harcore drugs that are destructive.
@surfyogi, I don't accept addiction of Cannabis. But Medical cannabis has lot of advantages. With this decision giving bad feelings to Nigeria. we’ve all heard stories of the miracles that medical cannabis can cause. Young children with epilepsy, destined for death or a life of disability, take a single dose of cannabis and are completely cured of their malady. People with cancer are suddenly almost entirely well after just a few drops of oil. In fact cannabis must need to legalize again.
Thanks for the informations , i think many plants have medical usage and that is very impostant to all human and for our health.
That would be greatest news sharing @surfyogi. There are has 50-50 advantages and dis-advantages. But its only my opinion.I chose epilepsy because it is the most commonly known use for cannabis, but this cycle repeats itself when you look at most other problems. Cannabis may be effective for treating chronic pain, but it can also cause heightened perceptions of pain. It might be helpful for people experiencing symptoms of multiple sclerosis, but it definitely causes some nasty side effects there as well. Thanks to valuable article.
This is awesome news for us Nigerians
The first important thing to note is that when we say medical cannabis, we are rarely talking about smoking a joint, or getting high. There’s strong, international evidence that smoking cannabis is bad for you, in much the same way that smoking virtually anything is harmful.
@surfyogi is banned in my country Ghana...you will be arrested in procession of it...
exceptional statistics from you @surfyogi, sure it has a few clinical utilization in addition to herbal usage too like enhancing hair boom whilst blended with hair cream, however i hope whilst it's miles accredited it will not be abused due to the fact that is probably a huge trouble.
