Jeff Sessions Asks Congress To Scrap Medical Marijuana Legislation

Jeff Sessions, the Attorney General of the United States proved to the world that he is a liar and a hypocrite. Session sat before his confirmation hearing and told the world that he only uses the tools to go after criminals given to him by congress. When addressing marijuana, Sessions said that if congress ants to stop enforcement, to change the law.

Sessions today showed the world that he is not happy only enforcing laws with the tools given him. He wants to insert his own personal agenda, and go after legally operating medical marijuana facilities. Sessions approached Congress and asked them to undo the medical marijuana protections passed in 2014 known as the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment. The amendment was pased for the specific purpose of allowing states to regulate their own medical marijuana markets, without interference.

The move also contradicts Sessions' stance that states rights are paramount over the will of the federal government. Sessions is the epitome of everything wrong with society. He is a racist, a sexist and believes everyone should be free to live as they choose...as long as he approves. He is symbolic of an archaic model of government that hasn't worked for anyone except white people in the 1950s. Sessions memo read*:

“I believe it would be unwise for Congress to restrict the discretion of the Department to fund particular prosecutions, particularly in the midst of an historic drug epidemic and potentially long-term uptick in violent crime. The Department must be in a position to use all laws available to combat the transnational drug organizations and dangerous drug traffickers who threaten American lives.”

Sessions' reference to the historic drug epidemic is correct, however, he is referring to the opioid crisis which has taken the lives of thousands. The more research that we uncover about the medical benefits of cannabis show that cannabinoids help with the withdrawal symptoms of opioid addiction. Not to mention that opioid deaths drop in marijuana friendly states. Sessions' ignorance can only be intentional and voluntary at this point, as the body of medical evidence supporting the benefits of cannabis can no longer be denied.

Many in the cannabis community believe that Sessions' memo is a scare tactic that will gain no traction. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher*, co-author of the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment, fired back at Sessions. “Mr. Sessions stands athwart an overwhelming majority of Americans and even, sadly, against veterans and other suffering Americans who we now know conclusively are helped dramatically by medical marijuana.”

If we have learned one thing about the Trump administration is that they are wholly toothless. They have been unable to get through a single piece of legislation, and have virtually no support from the vast majority of Americans. Sessions memo to congress is nothing more than another demonstration of how out of touch the American government is with its people.
