You're doing them a favor by wearing their brand.

The strange thing is, that seems like a no-brainer to me, yet a lot of people seem to have got that wrong way around. I'm shopping for birthday gifts for one of my closest friends, and it irritated me when I found a lovely pendant necklace that I liked and would've suited her well with a giant ass "GUESS" logo on one side of the chain.

Obviously, you're gonna put your brand name on the product. But why not do it discreetly, like Swarovski or Pandora or any of these slightly classier brands do? At the back, where you clasp it. Who wants to be strutting around town with a giant silver "GUESS" that's almost bigger than the pendant itself?

Well... lots of people.

In our backwards world, we've agreed to take this as a mark of value, which I guess explains the larger and larger logos we see on everything from shirts to watches to cars to jewelry. To me, it feels extremely crass. In the olden days, it used to be understood that while you could afford high end products, it was a paramount that the items be tasteful. Classy. It was most definitely not classy to trot around town with a giant blingy brand name.

You're not cattle.

You are not to be branded or act as a walking, talking ad. So why let yourself be that?

It occurred to me how bizarre it is that we've come to derive so much value and status from how big of a brand logo we can purchase when in reality, it should be the other way around, no? If the core of marketing is getting your name out there, surely brands should be paying you for the privilege of wearing you, not the other way around.

You are after all giving them free publicity. And while sure, it's better publicity when someone "Of note" wears your products, it is still publicity. Still marketing. Obviously, GUESS will sell more if Gigi Hadid wears their stuff (is she still popular?) than if I do. I'm nobody. At the same time, if a thousand nobodies all sport the GUESS brand, it's much bigger publicity, isn't it?

Because as a self-proclaimed nobody, I may not care too much if someone like Hadid wears Guess because I don't think we're on a level. I don't really bother to compare my life to hers. But if I see ten other random nobodies wearing it on the subway or the street, it suddenly seems a lot more like us nobodies should be doing this, right?

It's smart marketing. Way smarter than many of us realize. We think we're paying for the privilege of wearing Guess or whatever, but in truth, they're securing free marketing and massive sales by wearing us.

My friend's friends are more likely to be influenced by her wearing a big shiny brand logo on her neck than by famous women doing it. Obviously. We care more about being like our close peers than random celebrities.

Which begs the question... why sell yourself so cheaply?

Personally, I don't like wearing brands. I wear different logos from bars or festivals or bands or things and people whose existence enriches my own. And that's fine, I do that freely because I'm happy they exist. I don't know, are these people personally happy that Guess or Gucci or whoever exists? Maybe. But if not, I'd seriously reconsider the fees for my body and my agency in this world which is peddling your product.

If you're gonna sell yourself, make sure it's a worthy price, right?

So, what's your worth, baby?

Yes it is very clever marketing indeed, paying the clothes company to advertise their products for them. Very clever indeed. xxxx

It is a very logical rationing yours: You should pay me to exhibit your brand even if I am "nobody" but it is my body with your merchandise!

Yes we are somebody, but most just want to imitate like lambs those who "are somebody"...and it's a process of inertias that accumulate behind the great commercial propagandas....it's not that easy, it's something that is studied by the sales service of a company...people want what somebody glamorous has to reach the same status and that's terribly ridiculous.

The problem is that many people like to make a fool of themselves by wearing Guess or any other garment.

I admit that the style of some brands is nice, but not enough to let me get sucked in if I don't find them durable and practical.

I'm at the age of always wanting to be comfortable and that nothing is worth more than that.

Amen. It's a real gamechanger when you start dressing how you feel your best, 'cause it often means you also look better anyways :D

I hate anything with brand names. I run away from it. Here in my country, to even come across authentic brands is such a hassle. You might want to get a Balenciaga shirt and what is written on all the shirts is Balendiaga.
Here in Nigeria, there are more fake than authentic. And you wouldn't even know you bought the fake because the prices might still be as outrageous as the original itself😂
