So I find myself sitting here in an apartment on Campus, feeling like a bit of an anomaly.
I am not quiet part of the University or out of it. I float through the doors with the key card with no Purpose but to be available as and when required. You see I am very much needed and my purpose is to help but in the eyes of the person I am here to do that for. I am a burden, recognition of the reality.
That freedom that was once known and the freedom that keeps her from walking through freedoms door.
Life was once normal before an accident that altered her freedom, kept her from her dreams.
Now I am here reminding her of what she missed out on, that normal is a way of the past and in her light I am a distraction. One that makes her standout. You see I am a carer a person who chose to help people who find themselves in those challenges that life presented to them.
My goal is to support, assist and help those with things they cannot do on their own.
The truth is it can happen to any one of us at any given time. So we can choose to embrace life regardless and make sure our story of life does not end there. You see I believe each day we open our eyes is a choice to move forward and embrace the day we are given, the people around us.
To choose to be happy, kind, helpful, give someone a hug, a smile and make their life have a bit more purpose. To no feel limited by their abilities but to find ways to make things happen in a safe environment. There is a lot of prejudice about care workers, you only hear about the ones who are crewel and evil. They are the 5% that sell the stories in the papers. The ones who are the real care workers are the ones no body hears of. The ones who work away from their families, the ones who miss their loved ones Birthdays and events because they chose to help someone who could not do things by themselves. To be the ones to help the needy when nobody else was available.
The people who pick them up when they fall, comfort them when they lonely and tell a joke to make them laugh when they sad.
These are the people we don’t hear of, the people taken for granted in order to embrace the needy.
So when you see an old lady in a wheelchair and a person behind them pushing the wheelchair, share a smile with them both. It is free to share a smile and it could be the one thing that makes both there day.
For life is an anomaly and we all need a smile from time to time ;-)
