Audi is one of the most popular car brands in the world. Audi's history is vast and the story started in the early 1900s. Here are 10 things less well known about Audi's history:
August Horch, a former engineer at Karl Benz's firm, founded his own company in 1899 with a partner. The company was called Horch & Cie.
The first car built by Horch was in 1901. Following a dispute with his partners at Horch-Werke AG, he left the company, and in the same year he founded a new firm in the field of automotive under the name of Horch Automobil Werke GmbH. Following a dispute over the name "Horch" he could not use that name, changing the factory name to Audi Automobilwerke GmbH, Audi being the Latinization of the Horch name.
In 1928, the company was bought by Danish Jorgen Rasmussen, the owner of the automobile and motorcycle manufacturer DKW. In 1932, Audi joined Horch, DKW and Wanderer, forming Auto Union.
The Audi logo consists of four overlapping circles representing the four Auto Union member brands. The logo symbolizes the merger of Audi with DKW, Horch and Wanderer: the first circle represents Audi, the second DKW, the third is Horch, and the last, Wanderer.
In 1969, under the leadership of Volkswagenwerk AG, the merger between Auto Union AG and NSU Motorenwerke AG, the Neckarsulm-based factory, was carried out. The new company was named Audi NSU Auto Union AG.
In March 1980 at the Geneva exhibition at the Audi stand it was a real madness. There was the first Quattro Sport Coupe. The Audi Quattro was the first four-wheel drive car.
In 1985 it was decided that the name of the company Audi Automobile NSU Auto Union AG is difficult to pronounce many times. Audi NSU Auto Union AG became AUDI AG in 1985.
At the end of the 1980s, Audi was the first German automotive company to introduce a direct injection diesel engine and turbocharger to the Audi 100 TDI.
Audi introduced in the autumn of 1991 two sporty models boasting long time: the Audi quattro Spyder at the Frankfurt exhibition and the Audi Quattro Audi at the Tokyo exhibition.
The first generation of the Audi A4 (formerly known as the Type 8D) began in 1994, being produced on the Volkswagen B platform, which was also used to produce the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat.
I remember the Audi Quattro, driven by Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist, won the world rally championship lots of times in the 1980's. The red Audi Quattro in the BBC TV series Ashes to Ashes looked great.

I know I like their evolution
