The Viziv Performance concept of the last Tokyo Motor Show could foreshadow the next generation of WRX STI.

Subaru is considering the possibility of a new hybrid-powered sports car.

Heir to a former glory of the rallies, the Subaru WRX STI, which had abandoned the surname Impreza in 2014, should be withdrawn from the market in the course of the year 2018. And, even if the fans of the first hour should pour a a small tear, this stop risks for the majority, to pass relatively unnoticed.

Especially since the Japanese firm has a priori not planned to replace the famous sports anytime soon, preferring to focus on the models that make the bulk of sales, such as SUV XV or Forester. Nevertheless, it seems that the sport is not completely abandoned, as evidenced by the concept Viziv Performance presented recently at the Tokyo show.

Despite the lack of large aerodynamic appendages, the four tailpipes and the extractor give an overview of the sporting ambitions of this concept.

The latter, with its sporty four-door coupé silhouette and its Boxer petrol engine, combined of course with a highly evolved S-AWD all-wheel drive, seems to announce the potential arrival of a new generation of WRX STI.

See you in 2020

The brand seems confident that this concept will lead to a series model by 2020. For part of the customer, driving pleasure would always be important and Subaru does not want to abandon this fringe of enthusiasts.
However, if this new sports should necessarily be equipped with an all-wheel drive, it is not certain that the traditional four-cylinder flat engine is preserved. Or in any case it will probably not be the only source of this vehicle.

The solution of a plug-in hybrid system could indeed be retained, which would allow this future WRX STI to increase its level of power and performance by one notch. Anyway, it will probably wait a little longer before having more information about it.
