My pontiac fiero gt la1 gm 3400 v6 swap

in #cars7 years ago

Yeah man i did it i got that minuvan engine into my 86 gt that had been sitting for a year with a broken ironhead 3100 fiero topswap.

I got the headers (not manifold)from the stock heads to work by elongating the bolt holes on the header flange up or down i forgot i do remember it was 3/8" off so the edge of the old hole would touch the edge of the new hole... Same exhaust spacing and my round headers match the D ports radius and doesnt seem restrictive i also had to massage the crossover y pipe thing to clear the thermostat housing ive seen worse crushing at pimaries on old hotrods with no obvious restriction.

I had it running with the fuel line coming out the by the intake but i dont like that so im trying to accomodate flipping the rail over to shorten the line since the source is on the other side i had 4ft crazy straws for source and return which was very close to the header crossover and would seem to heat the fuel line which would cause the fuel to evaporate in the tank and make me hate myself more for omitting the evap purge system.

Coolant the fiero has a finnicky coolant system prone to air bubbles so i used the old fiero thermostat housing and bolted a smaller housing onto it to connect from the engine and elevate up to help trap air into the line going up front where the radiator is from there all the way back to a spring reinforced radiator hose over the ac location where i decided to put the alternator...

Alternator location depends on preferance i didnt want to cut up the decklid (hood) to accomodate the 3400 location and relocate the dogbone bracket so i made bracket for the ac location pretty straight forward if you had the parts and tools youd know what youd need to do... I was hoping to be able to use engine dogbone mount from fiero with little modification but i had to end up making one because i modified it to a toothpick and it ended up in the wrong spot so it couldnt preload away

The dogbone bracket had to be a certain angle so i made a template of the bolt pattern and did one proto type that looked like swiss 1x4 metal stock before i got the angle right in the goldylocks zone then copied it to a fresh piece

Engine mounting was the same as stock no complaint... Though the flywheel needs to be nuetrally balanced...88 fieros are already nuetrally balanced... Assuming its a v6 of course.

I bought an hp tuner to disable vehicle anti theft (vats) but it can be used for other unused process like for the automatic trans or egr or even the way it appearently runs rich when cold to warm the catalytic converter to prevent saturation damage with higher exhaust gas temp not doing nothing to go faster... Uh how about not... You can also just buy an ecm preprogrammed

I did the wiring but had a misinterpretation snag that required me to get in contact with the author of the schematic phonedawgs from fiero.nl forum which by the grace of god i got a response and found the problem with his help... If you come across the question of e or c its c... You gotta add c e is very important dont cut e and put it where c is suposed to go... Harness' are availavle but they want real money $750+ vs the ecm for $50.

I wanna go turbo but im trying to be elegible for lemons and id only have $300 left for the 1k bracket anyone got a turbo bov wastegate and plumbing they dont like anymore thatll work for over 200hp since the stock engine is 185hp i dont think nitrous is legal1522799873771-160938370.jpg

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

had it running with the fuel line coming out the by the intake but i dont like that so im trying to accomodate flipping the rail over to shorten the line since the source is on the other side i had 4ft crazy straws for source and return which was very close to the header crossover and would seem to heat the fuel line which would cause the fuel to evaporate in the tank and make me hate myself more for omitting the evap purge system.
It should be accommodate instead of accomodate.

Thats it? Oh... Youre a bot... Cute name ill being seeing you around Mfkrw

I am guessing that people are not liking the grammarnazi since you have a 10 status. Just a guess.

I thought it was cute id like it more if they did a german accent styling you hauve ze minor mizsmellung eroorz unst ze followung sentenceaz...

OK. Looking forward to seeing this run!

It ran great and turned my oil into mayo from the lim gasket failing i bought one beforehand since every time i read anything about v6 engines that gasket failure is mentioned... im flopping the fuel lines so they wont be heated by the exhaust and swapping the valve covers to make filling oil easier its actually all together now but i need a new upper intake now since i was hoping to grind some clearance out for the fuel rail crossover and went too deep so im trying a 3/16" thick nylon spacer i cut out of a mudflap with success so far just need to see what it does when it gets hot if it melts im going to try copper or mill off an intake and try the flange i wonder if ill gain any high end torque from the runner length increase or whatever that does
